Position Overview
The U.S. Department of the Interior is seeking dedicated individuals to assist in the management and care of Wild Horses and Burros (WHB). This role involves a variety of responsibilities aimed at ensuring the health and safety of these animals.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the supervisor in the classification of WHB received from gathers.
- Identify and report any signs of injury or disease among the animals, while assisting veterinarians with inoculations, deworming, and blood sample collection for disease testing.
- Administer booster vaccinations that do not require a licensed veterinarian, and maintain accurate records of WHB as they are processed and transported to adoption or holding facilities.
- Manage individual WHB that are reluctant to enter traps or corrals, guiding animals through the corral system, including chutes for necessary treatments.
- Utilize roping and immobilization techniques as required for various treatments.
- Perform general maintenance of facilities, including welding, carpentry, plumbing, basic electrical work, and operation of heavy machinery.
- Safely handle WHB during transportation in trucks, trailers, chutes, and corrals, ensuring humane transport practices are followed.
- Assist in compliance inspections with haulers and adopters to ensure adherence to regulations.
- Provide feeding and care for WHB, monitoring their physical condition and adjusting feed types and amounts as necessary.
- Handle and restrain difficult animals, performing tasks such as shearing, force feeding, and medication application.
