Key Responsibilities

  • Support the supervisor in categorizing Wild Horses and Burros (WHB) upon arrival from gathers.
  • Identify and report any visible injuries or signs of illness in the animals, while assisting veterinarians with vaccinations, deworming, and blood sample collection for disease testing.
  • Administer non-licensed booster vaccinations and assist in maintaining records of WHB as they are received, processed, and transported to adoption or holding facilities.
  • Manage individual WHB that are reluctant to enter traps or corrals, guiding animals through the corral system, including chutes for aging, medical treatment, freeze branding, gelding, and hoof care.
  • Utilize roping techniques or immobilization methods as necessary for various treatments.
  • Perform general facility maintenance, including welding, carpentry, plumbing, basic electrical work, and operating heavy machinery.
  • Safely handle WHB during transport in trucks, trailers, chutes, and corrals, assessing equipment and trailers proposed by horse haulers or adopters to ensure safe and humane transport.
  • Assist in conducting compliance inspections with haulers and adopters.
  • Provide feeding and care for WHB, monitoring their appearance, behavior, and overall health, and determining appropriate feed types and quantities.
  • Handle and restrain difficult animals, performing tasks such as shearing, force feeding, and administering medications.
