Our Pekin facility produces a variety of products aimed at the Health, Home & Beauty; Food and Beverage; Industry & Agriculture; Essential Ingredients; and Renewable Fuels sectors. All personnel are responsible for ensuring the safety and quality of these products, which includes participating in training, adhering to cGMP and food safety standards, and following management directives.

Position Overview: This role is pivotal in maintaining the current automation, instrumentation, and foundational infrastructure of the facility. The Automation Systems Engineer will assist in the planning, scheduling, and safe execution of automation-related projects, both Capital and non-Capital. This position adds value by ensuring the reliability of equipment and controls, meeting and exceeding the facility's goals for Compliance (Safety, Quality, and Environmental) and Production by diagnosing and troubleshooting electrical or control issues on all manufacturing equipment in accordance with plant policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the overall Campus Safety, Environment, and Quality initiatives through meticulous planning, scheduling, and problem-solving. Ensure that Automation processes and infrastructure are designed to facilitate the identification and resolution of Compliance issues and Work Orders. Compliance must be integrated into every task, with issues addressed promptly.
  • Monitor, maintain, and resolve any issues related to existing automation, instrumentation, and infrastructure systems within the facility.
  • Maintain and repair plant DCS Hardware and Software Systems to guarantee operational reliability.
  • Implement minor configuration changes to programming and operator HMI/interfaces for DeltaV DCS, PLCs, and PanelViews.
  • Assist in the design, integration, programming, final connections, startup, commissioning, warranty, and repair of process automation control systems, including but not limited to Allen Bradley and Delta V.
  • Develop data points for integration into enterprise-level historian (OSIsoft PI) and create/modify PI Vision dashboards as necessary across the plant.
  • Conduct site visits to assess process control system performance and ensure compliance with established procedures by field personnel.
  • Provide support to I/E technicians during troubleshooting and emergencies, responding to urgent situations during and outside of regular working hours as needed.
  • Assist in training Operations personnel on the proper use of new and existing functions of the DCS system.
  • Calibrate instrumentation devices utilizing specialized testing equipment and software.
  • Coordinate the review of all assigned tasks with relevant personnel, ensuring all specifications, drawings, submittals, purchase orders, and process images align with P&ID documentation.
  • Manage required subcontractors for assigned projects and scheduled preventative maintenance.
  • Participate in the recruitment and hiring of Specialty Technicians as necessary.
  • Provide technical support for instrumentation issues to ensure the plant's overall objectives are met.
  • Develop and maintain preventive maintenance, calibration, and testing schedules and procedures for all instrumentation and automation areas.
  • Coordinate spare parts for control systems to enhance reliability.
  • Oversee daily activities of Specialty Technicians when required.
  • Engage in continuing education and training related to process control and associated systems as necessary.
Qualifications:

Minimum Education/Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in PLC troubleshooting.
  • Proficient in reading technical drawings and schematics.
Preferred Education/Experience:
  • Two (2) year Technical Degree or higher.
  • Experience with Electrical controls.
  • Familiarity with electrical precision measurement tools.
Desired Skills/Abilities:
  • Experience in troubleshooting and programming Emerson DeltaV DCS (including programming, configuration, and design).
  • Proficient in PLC troubleshooting and programming, particularly with Allen-Bradley platforms (Studio5000, RSLogix5000, FactoryTalk, RSLinx, etc.) and hardware (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, MicroLogix, FlexIO, Panelview, etc.).
  • Knowledge of function block, ladder logic, structured text programming, and the configuration and troubleshooting of EthernetIP, DeviceNet, ModbusTCP, and other common industrial communication protocols.
  • Willingness to participate in training sessions to enhance and maintain DCS skillsets related to Delta-V and Allen Bradley systems.
Preferred Skills/Abilities:

Experienced with:
  • OSIsoft PI (Asset Framework, Vision, PI builder).
  • Operational Technology (OT) network infrastructure, including managed switches, fiber & copper transmission, and networking tools such as Wireshark, Putty, tcpdump.
  • SQL and database management.
  • Creating and modifying electrical schematics in CAD.
Strong Knowledge of:
  • Electrical safety regulations, including NEC, NFPA70E, and NFPA79.
  • Root-cause analysis for problem-solving to ensure timely resolution of observed abnormalities.
  • Proven success in managing and addressing operational issues within a continuous process improvement framework.
  • Technical leadership, team facilitation skills, adaptability, analytical and problem-solving capabilities, effective communication, and interpersonal relations.
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguous situations, independently drive progress, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Willingness to train other employees on the maintenance and troubleshooting of automation systems.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Ability to plan and organize the work of others, delegate tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience troubleshooting network systems, including best practices, termination, and connectivity testing.
  • Effective interaction and communication with project team members and plant stakeholders to gather and disseminate scheduling information.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Project, Main Saver, and various hardware and software systems.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work in extreme hot and cold environments.
  • Capability to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods, climb over and under pipes, navigate stairs and ladders, and access confined spaces.
  • Ability to use hands for handling, feeling objects, and utilizing tools, as well as reaching.
  • Ability to kneel, crouch, stoop, and crawl around equipment.
  • Ability to hear equipment and identify problems.
  • Effective communication with others via phone, radio, and in person, even in noisy conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs without assistance.
  • Capacity to manage high-stress situations.
