Position Overview

The City and County of San Francisco is seeking a skilled and dedicated Litigation Paralegal to support its dynamic Trial and Litigation Team within the City Attorney's Office. This role requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience, ideally within a litigation context.

Type of Employment: Permanent Exempt (PEX) position; appointees serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.

Litigation Team Overview

The Litigation Team consists of a collaborative group of attorneys and support staff, including paralegals and legal assistants. This team is responsible for defending the City against litigation in both State and Federal courts, handling cases that encompass personal injury, civil rights, and property damage.

Key Responsibilities

As a Litigation Paralegal, you will work closely with attorneys to perform a variety of essential legal tasks in a fast-paced litigation environment. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting in the drafting and implementation of litigation holds across various city departments.
  • Preparing and reviewing responsive pleadings, discovery documents, subpoenas, legal memoranda, and correspondence.
  • Facilitating electronic discovery and managing the organization, collection, review, and production of documents.
  • Conducting database searches and reviewing documents for relevance and privilege.
  • Preparing materials for discovery, hearings, or trials, including the use of trial presentation software.
  • Assisting in the preparation of motions and ensuring timely and accurate filings.
  • Supporting appeals by assembling records and conducting legal research.
  • Communicating with vendors, attorneys, and city department representatives regarding case status.
  • Managing multiple projects and prioritizing tasks for various attorneys.
  • Mentoring and training legal assistants and paralegal interns.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Compliance with California Business & Professions Code Section 6450, including completion of an ABA-approved paralegal program or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant.

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency in analyzing legal issues and performing detailed work with accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with civil legal procedures and terminology.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other legal software.
