Department: University Police
St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas is seeking qualified candidates for the role of On-Call Police Telecommunications Operator. This position entails serving as a Part-Time Telecommunications Operator, responsible for coordinating the activities of field personnel and supplying patrol units with critical information, in alignment with the university's mission and operational principles.
Position Requirements: The On-Call Telecommunications Operator is a pooled role that requires flexibility in working various shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays, particularly during special events such as sporting events, ceremonies, and other significant occasions.
Qualifications:
- Must possess or be eligible for a TCOLE Telecommunications license with a minimum of 2 years of public safety dispatch experience.
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain necessary licenses and certifications as mandated by relevant federal and state regulations.
- Successful completion of a comprehensive background check, including fingerprinting and psychological evaluation.
- No current indictments for any criminal offenses.
- No convictions for class B misdemeanors or higher.
- Must have no history of family violence offenses.
- Proficient in operating a multi-line phone system.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Access.
- Demonstrates prompt decision-making skills in emergencies, with the ability to analyze situations quickly and accurately.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Adherence to workplace guidelines and attendance policies is required.
- Post-training proficiency in using police radio equipment and data entry systems.
- Capacity to remain seated for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual in Spanish.
- Previous experience in university or college law enforcement communications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive and respond to emergency and informational calls.
- Manage public safety radio communications, dispatching police officers and monitoring law enforcement frequencies.
- Act decisively in emergencies, while simultaneously operating a multi-line phone system and computer-aided dispatch system.
- Maintain accurate records of incoming calls and police activities.
- Dispatch officers to incidents requiring police intervention.
- Monitor surveillance systems.
- Complete necessary reports and documentation.
- Collaborate with other emergency services and operate various computer terminals, including the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
