We are in search of a Cucurbit Breeding Project Assistant Manager to join our Germplasm Development team.

Position Objective:


The Cucurbit Breeding Project Assistant Manager will work in close collaboration with Lead Breeders to oversee breeding initiatives for Cucurbit crops, from the initial breeding phases to advanced trial evaluations.

This role is essential for ensuring a strong product pipeline catering to significant market needs. Key responsibilities include managing nurseries, executing hybrid trials, and delivering high-quality data to support informed product development. Furthermore, the individual will aid Lead Breeders in the integration of cutting-edge tools and technologies into the breeding process.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Conduct trials efficiently, encompassing nurseries and hybrid trials, from sowing to harvest.

2. Manage proprietary breeding databases, ensuring timely collection, curation, and storage of data, alongside performing data analysis.

3. Oversee the management of parental lines to guarantee their stability and purity.

4. Assist with marker-assisted inbred conversion projects to integrate essential traits.


5. Collaborate closely with Biological Operations, Breeding Trial Specialists, and genotyping laboratories for precise trial/project planning, forecasting, and execution.

The individual will act as a liaison and coordinator among key team members.


6. Support the Lead Breeder for melon in implementing the latest tools and technologies within the breeding program, including high-throughput phenotyping, predictive breeding methodologies, and innovative data visualization and analysis tools.

Team Interaction:

The Assistant Manager will engage with Cucurbit breeders, the Cucurbit Germplasm Development Lead, Applied Genetic Scientists, and Operations Leads to ensure timely and effective project delivery.


Geographic Considerations:
The role may involve periodic collaboration at various stations as required.

Accountabilities:

1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of key market segments and their respective breeding objectives.

2. Manage breeding activities, including pollination, material handling, plot management, and trial oversight, ensuring successful crop outcomes from sowing to harvest for both nurseries and field trials.

3. Foster strong working relationships with external trial cooperators.

4. Maintain effective communication with biological operations and genotyping labs to secure necessary resources for the breeding program.

5. Oversee genotyping activities, including tissue sampling, proper labeling, and communication with laboratories.

6. Ensure high-quality data collection and analysis to support data-driven decision-making.

7. Organize prototype testing in collaboration with operations and breeding trial specialists.

8. Support seed logistics and transfers in accordance with internal protocols, in collaboration with operations.

9. Explore and implement supporting technologies for the breeding program.

10. Maintain regular communication with the Lead Breeder.

Reporting and Communication:

1. Foster a collaborative working environment with the operations team, trait team, applied genetic scientists, and product specialists.

2. Ensure transparency and effective communication regarding operational efficiencies and best practices across sites.

3. Responsible for reporting key performance indicators for breeding projects.
