Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced HVAC Shop Supervisor to join our team at Johns Hopkins University. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair of all HVAC and plumbing equipment installed in our buildings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Schedule, coordinate, and supervise the installation and maintenance of HVAC and plumbing components and systems.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve the preventive maintenance program for plumbing systems, air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating equipment.
  • Work closely with other maintenance and trades personnel to determine and coordinate repair and modification needs.
  • Ensure the timely completion of tasks and prepare and maintain records, correspondence, and reports.
  • Apply basic principles and practices of employee supervision and participate in the training and development of employees.
  • Anticipate and procure supplies and materials needed for daily operations.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
  • Makes decisions regarding hiring, evaluation, and promotion and termination of employees.
  • Review plans for future buildings and inspect new buildings to ensure compatibility with existing HVAC and plumbing codes and maintenance standards.
  • Prepare labor and material estimates.
  • Evaluate and train subordinate personnel; review and maintain employee labor records; inspect work in progress and upon completion.
  • Ensure budgeting guidelines are met; prioritize shop expenditures to stay within budget and assist in preparation of capital and operations budgets.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports, including employee accident reports.
  • Coordinate HVAC/Plumbing outages when required.
  • Research new operational methods, techniques, and equipment and recommend their application where appropriate.
  • Assist with the preparation of specifications for the purchase of HVAC equipment, devices, and supplies.
  • Manage moderately complex HVAC and plumbing installations and repairs performed by outside contractors.
  • Assist in capital planning process to forecast long-term HVAC system upgrades and/or replacements.
  • Produce written documents when necessary and use personal computers to develop reports and/or spreadsheets.
  • Interpret university and department policies to assigned personnel and enforce safety regulations and adherence to proper codes and standards.
  • Maintain a safe work environment for direct reports.
  • Troubleshoot technical problems within HVAC and control systems and determine necessary repairs; use contemporary diagnostic equipment and hand tools to accomplish this.
  • Assist with maintaining campus steam and chilled water metering systems.
  • Be proactive in identifying problems early before they become significant problems requiring greater resources for resolution.
  • Adhere to rules set forth in the bargaining unit contract.
  • Utilize the University's time-keeping systems to accurately complete time and attendance reporting for subordinates.
  • Must be able to work overtime and respond to emergency calls (24/7).
  • Completes other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Formal training and/or education above the high school level in the HVAC Field is highly desirable and preferred.
  • Must have at least 10 years' experience in the field of HVAC maintenance and repair.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 year's experience in a supervisory role.
  • Must have experience with the operation of Building Automation and/or Energy Management systems, including both pneumatic and direct digital control systems.
  • Prior knowledge of CMMS systems.
  • Experience supervising in a union environment is preferred.
  • Plumbing experience preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Certification
  • Must have completed an HVAC journeyman level program or higher and achieved a respective journeyman's license. Must also hold a Universal CFC certification.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to remain stationary for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate a computer and/or other office equipment on a frequent basis.
  • Must frequently communicate with others and exchange accurate information.
  • Ability to move about the office and campus.
  • Ability to lift or move objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work indoor/outdoor in extremely hot and cold conditions.
