Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Manager/In-Charge Technologist and Medical Director, the nuclear medicine specialist will conduct a range of technical procedures that necessitate a significant level of independent judgment and initiative in the application of radionuclides for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in patients. Key Responsibilities
  • Welcome patients and ensure appropriate care during clinical procedures. Confirm patient identity using two identifiers and review orders for the procedure to be conducted. Recognize and react suitably to emergency situations. Gather relevant patient history and check for any procedural contraindications. Operate and maintain auxiliary equipment essential for the procedure. Communicate effectively with patients and their families. Prepare patients for procedures. Select and administer the correct radionuclide/medication via the appropriate route and dosage. Prepare necessary instruments, computers, and imaging protocols as outlined in the departmental procedure manual. Understand and apply ALARA principles in clinical duties. Assess image quality and perform additional views as necessary. Process and analyze computer-generated data. Collect samples for non-imaging studies. Prepare and administer interventional pharmacologic agents as per protocol. Maintain sterile techniques as required. Conduct imaging, non-imaging, functional studies, and therapeutic examinations according to established departmental protocols or as directed by the nuclear medicine physician or cardiologist. Ensure patient safety during transitions between devices or positions. Understand the operation of all safety devices common to the department and demonstrate judgment in their use. Be familiar with the departmental environment of care documentation. - 40 %
  • Radiopharmaceutical Duties - Adhere to proper procedures for the receipt and return of radioactive materials. Implement ALARA principles while performing radiopharmacy tasks. Maintain accurate records of doses administered to patients in the appropriate logbook and computer system. Keep a clean and organized environment in the radiopharmacy. Correctly label and store radioactive materials in designated areas. Display appropriate signage in necessary locations. Conduct quality control on radiopharmaceuticals as required. Follow guidelines for proper radionuclide preparations. Document the receipt and disposal of short and long half-life radionuclides accurately. Prepare and dispense diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals according to departmental protocols and within Title A mandates. Maintain strict sterile procedures when preparing human biological specimens, radionuclides, or cold compounds. - 15 %
  • Archiving Responsibilities - Maintain precise records related to performed exams. Operate the PACS system correctly and verify studies prior to archiving. Properly archive exams on optical discs for long-term storage. Maintain accurate radiopharmacy information on patient dose tickets and in the appropriate logbook. - 5 %
  • Administrative Duties - Obtain orders and verify appropriate clinical information, dates, and correct account numbers and types. Charge for procedures and supplies in accordance with governing regulations. Report equipment issues to the appropriate personnel and, when applicable, document confirmation numbers in the appropriate logbook. Review outstanding charges, investigate, and clarify reasons for charges listed as outstanding. Follow departmental downtime protocols. Familiarize oneself with and comply with all HIPAA mandates of the Department of Radiology and Prisma Health System. - 5 %
  • Environmental Responsibilities - Maintain a tidy, clean, and organized work environment. Restock work areas with linens and supplies as needed. Dispose of soiled linens, used supplies, radioactive materials, and biohazardous materials according to hospital policy. Notify relevant personnel regarding unsafe conditions (electrical, fire, chemical, equipment). Ensure proper signage regarding radioactive regulations is displayed. - 5 %
  • Communication Responsibilities - Foster intra, inter, and external communications. Uphold ethical standards in relationships and communications. Engage knowledgeably with physicians and healthcare workers regarding patient procedures. Maintain a pleasant and helpful demeanor during all phone communications. Initiate dialogue with central scheduling as necessary to ensure understanding of listed patient procedures. Assess the communication abilities of patients and take appropriate measures to ensure patient and family understanding of the procedures to be performed. Ensure all necessary consents are signed. Arrange for translation services as appropriate. - 5 %
  • Instrumentation Responsibilities - Conduct and evaluate routine quality checks on all instrumentation as specified in departmental quality manuals. Assess operational status and timely calibration of all survey instruments. Perform and evaluate dose calibrator constancy tests. Document all daily quality control checks in their respective logbooks. - 5 %
  • Radiation Safety Responsibilities - Consistently utilize personal radiation monitoring devices. Store personal monitoring devices properly. Understand and effectively apply procedures for managing and containing radioactive spills. Employ ALARA principles at all times. Educate patient family members and other healthcare providers on proper radiation safety measures following the administration of therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. Comprehend and adhere to departmental and regulatory policies regarding recordable events and misadministrations. Properly dispose of or store radioactive materials and waste. Remain vigilant regarding unauthorized individuals in the nuclear medicine department and challenge their identity and purpose for being present. Ensure all radioactive material sources are secured in the hot lab when the department is unattended by specific nuclear medicine personnel. - 5 %
  • Mentorship Responsibilities - Instruct students in the methodologies of nuclear medicine procedures and the principles of nuclear medicine technology. Closely supervise the activities of students assigned to the nuclear medicine department. Evaluate and document student progress as per the protocols of their academic institutions. Communicate with clinical instructors or department heads as necessary. Mentor newly hired nuclear medicine technologists in departmental policies and procedures. Assess new hires on equipment orientation according to a schedule established by the Manager. Report any deficiencies in education or comprehension to the manager or in-charge technologist. - 5 %
  • Achieve Patient Satisfaction for Prisma Health. Results will be documented in the annual evaluation from the Patient Satisfaction scorecard located on the C2E website under the Experience Pillar. Adhere to the Standards of Behavior. - 10 %

Minimum Qualifications
  • Certification Program - Graduate of an accredited Nuclear Medicine technology program
  • 1-year experience in Nuclear Medicine

  • Team members in this role as of 11/08/2020 are grandfathered from the education and experience requirements listed above pending state and regulatory requirements.
  • Clinical experience may be considered toward the 1-year experience requirement.
Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses
  • ARRT(N) or NMTCB registry with five years' experience in nuclear medicine
  • CPR and ARRT(N) registered and/or NMTCB registered
  • SCSQRSA License

  • Experience with Philips equipment preferred
  • Spect/CT experience preferred
  • Excellent Customer Service Skills
