Overview

This recruitment is specific to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, focusing on the Maryland Park Service. The purpose of this recruitment is to fill existing vacancies and may also be utilized for future openings within the same role. The eligible list created from this recruitment will be maintained for a duration of one year.

Main Responsibilities

The Park Operations Supervisor holds a supervisory role within the state park system, overseeing the operations of a small park facility. Responsibilities include managing staff across various park functions such as visitor services, resource management, facility upkeep, recreational activities, interpretive services, property oversight, and financial operations related to park revenue and concessions.

The supervisor directly oversees maintenance personnel, Park Service Associates, administrative staff, and may also manage temporary or contractual employees. Guidance is provided by a Park Services Assistant Manager, Park Services Manager, or another designated managerial position.

Work Environment

Employees may be required to work on-call, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays, and must be prepared to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. The role may involve lifting items weighing 25 pounds or more.

Key Duties

This position acts as an Area Manager, supporting the overall functionality of state park facilities. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing site supervision and guidance to full-time staff, seasonal employees, and volunteers.
  • Overseeing visitor services and general maintenance of grounds and facilities.
  • Administering grants and communicating established policies to the public.
  • Developing budgets and monitoring financial performance.
  • Ensuring the safety and efficiency of recreational facilities while preserving natural and cultural resources.

Weekend and holiday work is a requirement of this position.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess six years of experience, including two years in a supervisory capacity within park or forest operations, along with four years in park operations. Alternatives include a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field combined with supervisory experience, or a Master's degree which may substitute for some experience requirements.

Preferred Skills

Desirable qualifications include:

  • Experience supervising park operations and staff.
  • Field-level experience in a park environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Expertise in budget and personnel management.
  • Experience in maintaining park facilities and managing natural resources.
  • Collaboration with community and governmental agencies for public safety and resource protection.

Licenses and Certifications

Employees may be required to operate a motor vehicle and must possess a valid driver's license in the State of Maryland.

Special Requirements

Employees are subject to on-call duties 24/7 and may be assigned to any county within the state. Upon permanent appointment, residency in the assigned county may be required. Training in First Responder or equivalent first aid is mandatory.
