Job Overview

Position Summary: The Patient Care Technician I is responsible for delivering essential patient care and support services. This role focuses on addressing the personal, physical, and emotional needs of patients across various age groups, including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics, while adhering to the values and policies of the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates patient care by executing specific tasks as assigned by the Registered Nurse.
  • Assists with patient admissions, transfers, discharges, and transportation.
  • Records vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, weight, and blood glucose levels, promptly reporting any irregularities to the primary nurse.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in advanced skills such as oral suctioning, administering enemas (excluding Fleets), changing dressings post RN assessment, setting up tube feedings, managing external catheters, providing post-mortem care, and preparing suction canisters.
  • Engages in effective communication with healthcare team members to exchange information and resolve issues in a constructive manner, both verbally and electronically.
  • Documents patient information accurately on all hospital forms using standardized abbreviations.
  • Receives patient reports from the RN and outgoing PCT at the start of the shift and provides end-of-shift reports to the primary nurse and incoming PCT.
  • Participates in walking rounds with oncoming and outgoing PCTs during shift changes.
  • Offers personalized care to patients and their families, identifying and documenting any special needs on the patient rounding sheet.
  • Utilizes educational resources and attends mandatory training sessions to maintain competencies within the unit.
  • Employs materials, equipment, and time efficiently and safely.
  • Assists in emergency situations (e.g., CPR, obtaining necessary equipment) under the guidance of the Code Blue Team.
  • Follows organizational infection control protocols and safety policies, ensuring the use of two identifiers when collecting blood samples or performing procedures.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization in patient care areas, including treatment rooms, kitchens, and nursing stations.
  • Exemplifies and upholds the REACH values: Respect, Excellence, Accountability, Compassion, and Honor.
  • Demonstrates consistent and reliable attendance.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • AHA BLS healthcare provider certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic understanding of high school level subjects, including sciences and medical terminology.

Licensure and Certification:

  • No specific licensure or certification required.

Working Conditions:

Manual: Requires some manual skills and dexterity.

Occupational: Involves some occupational risks.

Physical Effort: Involves very heavy physical effort, potentially lifting up to 50 lbs.
