Job Summary

MedStar Health is seeking a highly skilled Child Life Specialist to join our team. As a Child Life Specialist, you will play a vital role in helping children and their families cope with the challenges of hospitalization and medical treatment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess children's developmental and coping needs, and implement developmentally appropriate therapeutic interventions to minimize distress.
  • Plan and implement individual and group activities that promote self-healing, self-expression, and understanding for hospitalized children and their families.
  • Provide consultation to the healthcare team on developmental status and individual needs of children to promote adaptation to treatment.
  • Utilize therapeutic play techniques to support children and families during medical procedures and stress points.
  • Develop and implement educational programs and in-services on child development and the impact of illness, injury, and hospitalization on children and families.
  • Collaborate with the Child Life, Education & Arts Coordinator to develop and implement community outreach programs.
  • Perform personnel management functions for the designated area, including interviewing, hiring, scheduling, coaching, counseling, evaluating, and terminating child life assistants and volunteers.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Child Life, Education, Psychology, Child Development, or a related field.
  • 2 years' experience as a child life specialist in an acute healthcare setting.
  • Professionally certified child life specialist.
  • Certification as a recreational therapist, art therapist, drama therapist, or dance/movement specialist.
