Summer Educational Facilitators for Upward Bound

Position Overview: The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking for dedicated instructors to engage high school students in non-credit courses during the summer educational sessions. The focus will be on various subject areas including, but not limited to:

  • Language Arts
  • Science
  • Mathematics
  • Foreign Languages
  • Engineering
  • Sociology
  • Psychology
  • Criminology
  • Debate
  • Financial Literacy
  • Expressive Arts
  • Entrepreneurship

Program Structure: Instructors may be engaged for one or both components of the program. The summer sessions will emphasize encouraging students to explore and pursue careers in STEM fields. Classes will be held Monday through Thursday, with Fridays designated for student excursions.

Responsibilities: Instructors will be tasked with creating an interactive, project-based learning environment that integrates essential skills and subject material. The program aims to support approximately 220 income-eligible and potential first-generation students from diverse backgrounds in their pursuit of higher education.

Key Duties Include:

  1. Designing and delivering project-based curriculum aligned with educational standards.
  2. Implementing differentiated lesson plans to accommodate diverse learning needs.
  3. Submitting course syllabi and supply requests in a timely manner.
  4. Incorporating competencies and objectives into lesson plans to foster critical thinking.
  5. Creating a supportive and positive learning atmosphere.
  6. Assessing student performance and providing constructive feedback.
  7. Collaborating with program staff to meet educational goals.
  8. Managing classroom behavior and maintaining discipline.
  9. Participating in pre-summer training and regular instructor meetings.

Compensation: Instructors will receive a minimum of $1,900 per course, with the number of courses dependent on program needs and student enrollment.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience working with diverse and underrepresented student populations.
  • Prior involvement in educational programs for low-income, first-generation youth is preferred.
  • A master's degree in a related subject area and teaching experience are advantageous.

Successful candidates must complete necessary background checks and training prior to employment.
