Job Summary

The Itinerant Special Education Coordinator will serve as a liaison between schools and Central Office, facilitating the Special Education process at assigned buildings. This role requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on supporting school-based Special Education Coordinators and ensuring compliance with division procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a liaison between schools and Central Office, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  • Attend scheduled meetings at Central Office, participating in and/or chairing department meetings to disseminate information.
  • Chair Child Study meetings, ensuring adherence to process and procedures.
  • Administer norm-referenced educational testing for eligibility purposes.
  • Mentor new special education teachers, providing guidance and support.
  • Consult and collaborate with outside agencies, RCPS' alternative placements, and private day schools on behalf of students.
  • Review building-level Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for compliance with content and timelines.
  • Communicate with Special Education Supervisors regarding building concerns, special situations, and attendance at IEP meetings.
  • Support the completion of end-of-year file management, ensuring case managers have organized files according to procedure.
  • Assist with articulation for transitioning students between home school and feeder school, private day to home school, and home school to RCPS alternative program.
  • Maintain a Tracking Log for eligibility timelines.
  • Facilitate initial eligibility meetings.
  • Prepare paperwork, manage, and present FAPT & CPMT cases.
  • Support the timely submission of all school Medicaid and transportation documentation.
  • Observe students in alternative settings to prepare for transitions.
  • Travel between schools, as needed and directed, for both planned and emergency days.
  • Assist administration with Instructional Assistant assignments.
  • Maintain accurate student information in Synergy.
  • Assist administration in assigning case managers.
  • Ensure building-level compliance with all Special Education matters.
  • Assist with organization of VAAP collection; review portfolios before submission.
  • Coordinate with STC's for SOL test accommodations.
  • Model PBIS practices for staff and students.
  • Encourage and model positive interactions with peers.
  • Provide and/or model classroom management support.
  • Provide alternatives to suspension.
  • Ensure building-level social skill curriculums and/or plans for teaching, as needed.
  • Teach conflict resolution skills, self-monitoring, and coping skills.
  • Participate in the FBA process and facilitate FBA meetings.
  • Facilitate the development of BIPs.
  • Facilitate MDR process.
  • Assist in arranging or providing training and/or in-service for special education department, IAs, and building staff on Special Education High Leverage Practices and division procedures.
  • Monitor IEP development and data collection to ensure IEP goals and data align with specialized instruction.
  • Ensure accommodations are provided as noted in IEPs.
  • Provide alternative modes of completing assignments.
  • Assist staff in developing strategies to support learning for individual students.
  • Monitor that students are receiving Tier 1 & 2 instruction in addition to Tier 3.
  • Ensure students are receiving specialized instruction, beyond Tier 1 & 2, as determined by disability.
  • Assist administration in developing schedules to provide supports for instruction.
  • Model data collection of skills across time and setting.
  • Provide models of how to write quality progress reports for staff; review case manager reports, as needed.
  • Assist with ordering necessary materials for department (protocols, procedural safeguards, CANS, classroom items, etc.).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in an applicable field of education from an accredited college or university.
  • Collegiate Professional License with an endorsement at the appropriate level.
  • Positive interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Prefer at least 3 years of special education employment with Roanoke County.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation, as travel between schools will be necessary.
