Job Overview:The Commonwealth of Virginia is inviting applications for a Full-Time, Special-Purpose Faculty role at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor within the Department of Psychology. This position will serve as the Program Coordinator for the Undergraduate Major and will spearhead initiatives aimed at enhancing student retention and engagement. The area of specialization is flexible, allowing for a diverse range of expertise. This role is structured as a renewable nine-month, non-tenure-track appointment.
The successful candidate will hold a master's or doctoral degree in psychology, with the degree conferred by the start date, and possess prior teaching experience. Candidates with experience in advising undergraduate students will be given preference.
The Department of Psychology is a key component of the College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences (CHBS). It offers an undergraduate major and minor in psychology, a master's program with specializations in Experimental and Industrial Organizational Psychology, and an Ed.S./M.S. program in School Psychology. Additionally, the department contributes to the university's General Education curriculum and supports essential courses across various majors.
The primary focus of this position is to enhance the undergraduate major and minor. Responsibilities will be divided equally between teaching and service duties. Teaching responsibilities may include courses in the candidate's area of expertise, as well as behavioral statistics, research methods, and specialized topics in research. Service duties encompass a variety of tasks, including:
- General advising for psychology majors
- Collaboration with psychology faculty on student advising
- Consultation on the undergraduate curriculum and scheduling
- Supervision of internships
- Representation of the department at recruitment events
- Mentorship of the psychology club and Psi Chi
- Development of student retention and engagement strategies
