Position Summary:

The role of the Laboratory Assistant is essential in ensuring the smooth operation of our pathology department. This position involves meticulous handling of patient samples and documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accurately manage and process patient pathology materials, including order forms, reports, slides, and paraffin blocks, ensuring proper documentation and labeling.
  • Digitally archive paper records, including pathology and consultative reports, into accessible formats for medical professionals.
  • Perform various archival functions such as specimen storage, retrieval, processing, tracking, and shipping of patient materials.
  • Maintain strict adherence to patient identification protocols and uphold regulatory standards for patient privacy.
  • Input tissue samples into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), applying barcoded labels, and facilitate the distribution of samples to relevant staff.
  • Regularly return materials via certified mail, ensuring secure handling and tracking.
  • Prepare and distribute final reports to attending physicians, including necessary contact information.
  • Provide support to clinical staff with additional tasks as required.

Qualifications:

  • Background in medical terminology is preferred.
  • Comfortable working with human tissue samples.
  • Exceptional attention to detail is essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Understanding of federal and patient privacy laws to ensure confidentiality.
