Position Overview

The Lab Manager/Senior Research and Development (R&D) Chemist is responsible for overseeing a wide array of functions within the R&D Department. This role emphasizes the guidance of initiatives related to (1) The innovation of new silicone formulations, production methodologies, and testing protocols, (2) The management of R&D and Quality Control (QC) chemists, and (3) The delivery of exceptional technical support to clients while aiding internal Quality Control and Manufacturing processes.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Safety Management
    1. Adhere to all occupational health, safety, and environmental regulations.
    2. Report any unsafe conditions or work-related injuries to leadership.
    3. Utilize assigned personal protective equipment.
    4. Handle hazardous materials and waste in compliance with company and legal standards.
    5. Recommend enhancements to the ISO 9001 Quality Management System.
  2. Process Development - Collaborating with R&D Chemists, the Production Manager, and the Plant Engineer, the Lab Manager is tasked with designing and documenting new process instructions. Specific duties include:
a. Overseeing the workflow of product development by managing projects assigned to R&D Chemists.

b. Consulting with the production team and Production Manager to identify constraints and optimal solutions for new processes.

c. Working with the Plant Engineer to ensure all necessary equipment is suitable for new processes.

d. Making recommendations regarding quality assurance practices.
  1. Product Development - Encompasses activities from initial bench-scale experiments to full-scale production, including synthetic and formulated products tailored to customer specifications while adhering to:
a. Cost efficiency

b. Scalability

c. Safe handling of chemicals and equipment

d. Customer requirements

e. Compliance with internal and external environmental and health standards

f. Scientific inquiry principles

g. Rigorous statistical and experimental design methodologies
  1. Quality Assurance - Implementing quality assurance techniques is a crucial responsibility of the Lab Manager/Senior R&D Chemist. Upon the development of a new product ready for production, the Lab Manager finalizes the appropriate QC testing methods.
  2. Supervisory Responsibilities - The incumbent oversees the activities of R&D and QC chemists, which includes:
    1. Assigning new projects to R&D Chemists
    2. Providing initial project suggestions.
    3. Offering guidance and corrections as necessary for both R&D and QC teams.
    4. Troubleshooting issues as they arise.
  3. Chemical and Materials Science
a. Conducting routine qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses as part of Process and Product Development.

b. Performing physical property characterizations (e.g., tensile strength, elongation, durometer) on materials.

c. Developing modified or new analytical and physical property characterization methods when standard methods are insufficient.
  1. Production Support - As a technical contributor focused on process technology and development, the Lab Manager regularly collaborates with production staff on scale-up activities and process troubleshooting.
8. Technical Service and Collaboration

a. Providing technical support to the Sales team by investigating and resolving customer complaints, addressing technical inquiries, and educating the Sales team on new products.

b. Collaborating with the Marketing Department to create sales and safety documentation, including Technical Data Sheets, Safety Data Sheets, and Product Overviews as necessary.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

Education/Experience:

A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science; 2 to 6 years of laboratory experience in product development or closely related fields.

Language Proficiency:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical literature, financial reports, and legal documents. Capable of responding to inquiries from customers, regulatory bodies, or business professionals. Proficient in writing articles and speeches that adhere to established style guidelines.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Competent in performing mathematical operations related to frequency distribution, test reliability, and validity analysis.
