Position Overview

A Healthcare Support Specialist I (HSS I) is required in the General Medicine Unit (7 Bedtower). The HSS I fulfills a dual function as both a Nursing Assistant I and a Health Unit Coordinator.

7 Bedtower comprises a 15-bed unit dedicated to the care of acute patients presenting with diverse diagnoses and multiple co-morbidities within the medicine department. On this unit, staff will employ holistic nursing care through a multi-disciplinary approach, which is essential for achieving optimal patient outcomes. Leadership within 7 Bedtower is committed to fostering individual growth opportunities for team members by understanding their professional aspirations and goals. We cultivate a positive and secure work environment where teamwork encourages collaboration.

*This role is eligible for our Nursing Support Incentive Program, which offers $5,000 distributed over a three-year commitment. For further details about the program, please refer to our internal resources.

This position entails 36 hours of work per week, with 12-hour rotating shifts (7am-7:30pm and 7pm-7:30am) including weekend and holiday rotations. An extensive benefits package is available, including PTO hours accrued based on hours worked. Attendance at a mandatory week-long hospital orientation, conducted bi-weekly, is required.

Orientation Schedule: Monday and Tuesday - In-person from 8am to 4:30pm; Wednesday - 8am to 10am Online & in-person from 1pm to 5pm; Thursday and Friday - Virtual.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Assist physicians and healthcare providers during routine examinations and procedures, as well as in the procurement of necessary equipment and supplies.
2. Diligently review patient care documentation, noting any significant changes in patient conditions, and promptly report to a registered nurse or physician.
3. Perform various clerical tasks, including organizing and prioritizing workload, greeting and directing visitors, researching information as requested by nursing and medical staff, reviewing orders for logic and clarity, revising orders as directed by nursing staff, answering telephones/patient call lights, transcribing physician orders, and maintaining medical records. Conduct routine quality assurance audits, safety checks, and inventory of supplies. Provide administrative and clerical support, including performance improvement audits and data entry.
4. Deliver clinical support assistance, which includes cleaning work areas, maintaining office equipment, troubleshooting common software and hardware issues, changing linens, checking supply inventory, restocking supplies, transporting patients/supplies/specimens, and assisting in the orientation of new employees and students.
5. Provide direct personal care to patients as outlined in care plans, including bathing, dressing, feeding, and assisting with ambulation. Measure and record vital signs, height, and weight. May also be responsible for specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage.
6. Reinforce routine education provided to patients by registered nurses or physicians and document patient understanding of instructions. Distribute patient education materials as requested by patients and/or healthcare providers.

Additional Information

Education Requirements:
● High School diploma or GED.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Listed as Nurse Aide I Registry with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
● Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● One (1) year of clerical or customer service experience and six (6) months of related nursing assistant experience, which may include a nursing assistant course or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● Must be fluent in verbal and written English. Ability to develop computer skills if not already competent.
