Position Overview

The Oncology Nutrition Specialist will deliver outpatient dietary guidance and education to patients, families, and the community within the oncology sector. This role involves coordinating care, evaluating and identifying nutritional risk factors, developing care plans in collaboration with patients, providing education (both group and individual), and monitoring outcomes in conjunction with other healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with primary care providers, oncologists, and a multidisciplinary team to identify and implement strategies that support patients in managing their nutrition throughout cancer treatment and survivorship.
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology and medication management related to oncology, diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, gastrointestinal disorders, food allergies, obesity, malnutrition, and metabolic disorders, along with foundational concepts of nutrition care coordination and motivational techniques.
  • Participate in community outreach initiatives to promote nutrition services and provide educational resources.
  • Engage in additional projects and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Monitor and document nutrition-specific outcomes.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor of Science in Nutrition is required; a Master of Science is preferred.

  • 2-3 years of experience in outpatient or inpatient nutritional counseling.
  • 1-3 years of experience working specifically with oncology patients.
  • Registered Dietitian with current licensure and registration.
  • Certification as a Specialist in Oncology (CSO) is preferred upon hire; if not held, successful completion of the CSO exam is required within 12 months of employment, with costs covered by the organization.

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Expertise in the pathophysiology and management of oncology, malnutrition, diabetes, lipids, hypertension, gastrointestinal issues, kidney disease, liver disease, and metabolic disorders, along with knowledge of nutrition care coordination and motivational techniques.
  • Familiarity with the Nutrition Care Process, Nutrition-Focused Physical Exam (NFPE), and Malnutrition Diagnosing Criteria.
  • Strong understanding of safe nutrition programming principles for cancer patients.
  • Experience in developing nutrition care plans for patients receiving enteral and parenteral nutrition.
  • Ability to interpret lab results and request necessary laboratory tests.
  • Knowledge of vitamins, minerals, supplements, and their interactions with medications.
  • High cultural competency; a commitment to equity and inclusion; effective verbal and written communication skills; and the ability to collaborate and provide constructive feedback.
  • Strong leadership abilities and capacity to work independently.
  • Proficient in navigating electronic health records (EHR), Microsoft Office, and Excel.

We provide a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, 401k, vacation, and paid time off, along with a supportive work environment.

Salary range is $70,000 to $85,000.
