Position Overview:


Under the supervision of the Laboratory Director or their appointed representative, the Laboratory Science Specialist is responsible for executing pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes to deliver critical data for health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of various medical conditions.

This role is pivotal in enhancing patient care quality and service through effective interdepartmental collaboration and adherence to quality assurance protocols.

Key Responsibilities:


1. Ensure accurate verification of specimens being analyzed for the appropriate patients and confirm that the correct tests are conducted.

2. Assess the adequacy and quality of submitted specimens for testing.
3. Conduct analyses of clinical laboratory specimens in accordance with established methods and procedures sanctioned by the Laboratory Director or their designee. Implement quality control measures to guarantee the precision of clinical data.
4. Utilize reference ranges (including neonates, pediatric, and adult) to evaluate the reasonableness of test outcomes. Validate test results through correlation with test parameters (e.g., Hgb/Hct, anion gap, platelet count/smear, dipstick/micro, etc.). Confirm testing on all Critical Values to ensure accuracy before the release of test results.
5. Perform routine preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on assigned instruments and equipment as per established schedules and procedures. Document instrument functionality by checking and calibrating specific laboratory instruments and recording data.
6. Maintain logs of any repairs, replacements, and maintenance required for equipment. Release or report results in accordance with Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures. Provide training to laboratory assistants on proper techniques and procedures related to clinical laboratory practices. Undertake other related duties as necessary.

Supervisory Duties:
May provide general or direct supervision of Laboratory Assistants and Clerical Personnel as required in compliance with laboratory laws and regulations.

Compliance and Accountability:

Uphold the principles of Corporate Compliance and Responsibility by maintaining confidentiality, safeguarding the organization’s assets, acting with integrity, reporting any observed fraud and abuse, and adhering to applicable state, federal, and local laws and program policies and procedures.


Qualifications:
Experience:
Minimum of six months of relevant experience required.
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree (Applicable military experience may substitute for a bachelor’s degree). A baccalaureate degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences or a related field is required.
Licensure:
Clinical Laboratory Scientist License (California)

Additional Skills:
Proficient in reading and comprehending simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.

Capable of effectively presenting information in one-on-one and small group settings to customers, clients, and other personnel within the organization.

Must be willing to operate within a Labor Management Partnership environment.
Refer to Position Specifications outlined in the relevant collective bargaining agreement.

Preferred Experience:
Experience in Hematology, Urinalysis, Chemistry, Blood Bank, and Bacteriology is preferred. Proficiency in computer applications is also preferred.
