Position Overview

The Executive Medical Director (EMD) for Surgical Specialties provides strategic leadership in the clinical, operational, and financial performance of the MultiCare Health System (MHS) physician enterprise within the Surgical Specialties division. Reporting directly to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of MultiCare Medical Partners (MMP), the EMD is responsible for driving the strategic expansion of the service line and acts as the primary clinical leader in collaboration with the administrative leadership of the medical group and associated facilities, focusing on performance optimization and compliance. The EMD directs initiatives and strategies that lead to successful health outcomes, enhanced patient experiences, medical cost efficiency, and a workplace of choice to deliver high-performing, high-value care. The EMD collaborates with both ambulatory and hospital leadership to implement physician enterprise strategies and program initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contributes positively to the organizational culture, leading in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of the organization. Develops strategic vision, creates actionable plans, and monitors performance for care delivery, clinical quality, and performance improvement across the Surgical Specialties division.
  • Establishes objectives and facilitates the execution of the highest quality clinical services, achieving key performance indicators in quality, patient outcomes, cost, and engagement.
  • Ensures that all aspects of care delivery within MHS facilities adhere to the highest standards of clinical performance.
  • Responsible for the establishment, implementation, and continuous enhancement of clinical protocols and care models within the care line, aligned with system strategy and financial targets while ensuring adherence to quality performance standards.
  • Develops a high-performing management team and holds leaders accountable for the performance of individual clinics, service lines, and collective system markets.
  • Collaborates with staff, directors, clinical medical directors, and administration to strategically manage the care line, ensuring that goals are met for the delivery of high-quality access to care and cost-effective healthcare services aligned with MMP and regional strategic objectives.
  • Works with leaders across MultiCare Health System markets to drive performance in value-based care initiatives relevant to the care line.
  • Participates in employee and physician engagement efforts, including recruitment and retention strategies. Ensures that compensation methodologies and incentive metrics align with strategic service line outcomes.
  • Acts as the designated MMP leader responsible for overseeing all embedded MHS support services that impact the clinical offerings for patients within the Surgical Specialties division, including pharmaceutical products, office and facility equipment, and embedded clinical services.

Care Line Specific Duties:

  • Oversees care delivered across the continuum within the Surgical Specialties care line by employed and credentialed clinicians. All employed physicians and advanced practice providers in the departments of General Surgery and related subspecialties report to the EMD.
  • Partners effectively with key stakeholders to achieve exceptional surgical outcomes in both ambulatory and acute care settings, ensuring adherence to best practices and clinical policies.
  • Collaborates with acute care facility leaders to ensure best practices and compliance with established quality standards for care delivered by clinicians with privileges in acute care facilities.
  • Accountable for care line participation and performance in system initiatives, including relevant committee and clinical council efforts.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited medical school (MD or DO).
  • Licensed to practice medicine in Washington State.
  • Board certification or similar accreditation in a relevant medical specialty.
  • Credentialed to practice in MHS facilities.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of clinical experience providing direct patient care.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in a medical leadership role, with a minimum of three (3) years as a medical director or equivalent with increasing responsibilities.
  • Additional education in healthcare administration is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including competitive salary, medical, dental, retirement benefits, and paid time off. As mandated by various pay transparency laws, we provide a competitive salary range for this position. The pay scale is $500,000 to $800,000.00 USD, influenced by factors specific to applicants, including skill set, experience level, and certifications. If this position is associated with a union contract, pay will align with the appropriate step on the pay scale based on the applicant's years of experience.
