Position Overview
The Executive Medical Director (EMD) for Surgical Specialties provides strategic leadership in the clinical, operational, and financial performance of the MultiCare Health System (MHS) physician enterprise within the Surgical Specialties division. Reporting directly to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of MultiCare Medical Partners (MMP), the EMD drives the strategic expansion of the service line and acts as the accountable clinical leader, collaborating with administrative leadership to optimize performance and ensure compliance. The EMD directs initiatives and strategies that lead to improved health outcomes, enhanced patient experiences, cost-effective medical care, and a desirable workplace to achieve high-value care.Key Responsibilities:
- Contributes positively to the organizational culture, aligning leadership with the mission, vision, and values of the organization. Develops strategic vision, implements tactics, and monitors performance for care delivery, clinical quality, and performance improvement across the Surgical Specialties division.
- Establishes objectives and facilitates the delivery of high-quality clinical services, achieving key performance indicators in quality, patient outcomes, cost efficiency, and engagement.
- Ensures that all aspects of care delivery within MHS facilities adhere to the highest standards of clinical performance.
- Responsible for the establishment, implementation, and continuous enhancement of clinical protocols and care models within the service line, aligned with system strategy and financial objectives.
- Builds a high-performing management team and holds leaders accountable for the performance of individual clinics and service lines.
- Collaborates with staff, directors, clinical medical directors, and administration to strategically manage the service line, ensuring alignment with MMP and regional strategic goals.
- Works with leaders across MultiCare Health System markets to enhance the performance of value-based care initiatives relevant to the service line.
- Engages in employee and physician engagement efforts, including recruitment and retention strategies, ensuring compensation methodologies and incentive metrics align with strategic service line outcomes.
- Acts as the designated MMP leader accountable for the integration of all embedded MHS support services that influence the clinical offerings for patients within the Surgical Specialties division.
Specific Responsibilities for the Care Line:
- Oversees care delivered across the continuum within the Surgical Specialties care line by employed and credentialed clinicians, including General Surgery and related subspecialties.
- Partners with key stakeholders to achieve outstanding surgical outcomes in both ambulatory and acute care settings, ensuring adherence to best practices and clinical policies.
- Collaborates with acute care facility leaders to maintain best practices and quality standards for care delivered by clinicians.
- Accountable for care line participation and performance in system initiatives, including relevant committee and clinical council efforts.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited medical school (MD or DO).
- Licensed to practice medicine in Washington State.
- Board certification or similar accreditation in General Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, Gastroenterology, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, or a related medical specialty.
- Credentialed to practice in MHS facilities.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of clinical experience in direct patient care.
- At least five (5) years of experience in a medical leadership role, with a minimum of three (3) years as a medical director or equivalent with increasing responsibilities.
- Additional education in healthcare administration is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits
We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including competitive salary, medical, dental, retirement benefits, and paid time off. The salary range for this position is $500,000 to $800,000.00 USD, influenced by factors such as skill set, experience level, and certifications. If this position is part of a union contract, compensation will align with the appropriate step on the pay scale based on the applicant's experience.
