Senior Research Engineer

As a Senior Research Engineer at Thomson Reuters Labs, you will join a global team of interdisciplinary experts. We recruit engineers and specialists across various AI research domains to propel the company's digital evolution. The landscape of AI science and engineering is rapidly advancing. We seek an adaptable learner who can think algorithmically and enjoys acquiring and developing new skills as required; someone who thrives in exploring new challenges and enjoys guiding and supporting the efforts of others.

Key Responsibilities:

In this role as a Senior Research Engineer, you will:
  • Provide Leadership: Offer technical guidance while collaborating with fellow engineers to refine methodologies and enhance the technology stack.
  • Develop and Implement: Utilizing modern software development practices, you will engage in the complete software development lifecycle, constructing, testing, and delivering high-quality solutions.
  • Create Scalable ML Solutions: You will design extensive data processing pipelines to assist researchers in developing and training innovative machine learning algorithms. You will build high-performing scalable systems suitable for large online delivery environments.
  • Collaborate Effectively: In a team-oriented environment, you will share insights, appreciate diverse perspectives, and partner with cross-functional and remote teams.
  • Embrace Agility: With a strong sense of urgency and a desire to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic setting, you will deliver timely solutions.

About You:

You are an ideal candidate for the Senior Research Engineer position if your qualifications include:

Essential Skills & Experience:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in software engineering.
  • At least 3 years of experience working on a Machine Learning-related product or solution.
  • Experience in developing end-to-end ML projects, including deployment and performance metrics.
  • Experience leading technical workstreams within a software engineering environment.
  • Proficiency in Python software development stacks and ecosystems.
  • Ability to understand, apply, integrate, and deploy Machine Learning capabilities and techniques into various systems.
  • Familiarity with the Python data science stack, including libraries such as Numpy, Scipy, Pandas, Dask, spaCy, NLTK, and scikit-learn.
  • A commitment to writing clean, reusable, maintainable, and well-tested code.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in automation, system monitoring, and cloud-native applications, with experience in AWS or Azure (or a similar cloud platform).
  • Strong skills in system analysis and design, with a focus on DevOps and automation.
  • A willingness to learn and embrace new and emerging technologies.
  • Familiarity with probabilistic models and a solid understanding of the mathematical principles underlying machine learning methods.
  • Experience in leading and/or mentoring teams.
  • Ability to provide guidance around challenges faced by the team.
  • Experience in communicating updates to internal stakeholders.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
  • Experience integrating Machine Learning solutions into production-grade software, with a solid understanding of ModelOps and MLOps principles and the ability to bridge the gap between research and engineering methodologies.
  • Exposure to Natural Language Processing (NLP) challenges and familiarity with key tasks such as Named Entity Recognition (NER), Information Extraction, and Information Retrieval.
  • Proven track record of successfully integrating Machine Learning solutions into production-grade software.
  • Hands-on experience with additional programming and scripting languages (Java, TypeScript, JavaScript, etc.).
