Join Our Team as a Senior Underwriter in Construction

At AXA XL, we specialize in providing tailored insurance solutions for the unique challenges faced by contractors. Our Middle Market Construction division is dedicated to offering comprehensive casualty coverage to contractors and specialty trade clients across North America.

Due to our expanding operations, we are seeking a Senior Underwriter to enhance our Construction sector. In this pivotal role, you will collaborate with the Head of Construction to shape the strategic direction of our US Middle Market Construction business while managing a portfolio aimed at achieving profitable growth.

Key Responsibilities
  • Engage with Middle Market producers to secure both new and renewal business within the construction sector.
  • Analyze submission materials, including loss history, and conduct thorough research to assess the risk level for each account in line with our construction appetite guidelines and internal regulations.
  • Collaborate with various internal departments such as Actuarial, Claims, Reinsurance, Accounting, Marketing, and Strategy & Analytics to support our business objectives.
    • Make informed decisions regarding risk acceptance or rejection.
    • Calculate rates and premiums using established rating models.
    • Tailor policy language as necessary, ensuring compliance with underwriting authority when standard forms are inadequate.
    • Promote cross-selling of available products and services.
    • Uphold service standards in delivering primary casualty construction products and services.
    • Work collaboratively with fellow underwriters to achieve cross-marketing goals.
In this position, you will report directly to the Head of Construction for the U.S. Middle Market.

Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for candidates who possess the following qualifications:
  • Solid experience in Commercial Underwriting.
  • Expertise in underwriting solutions for construction managers, general contractors, and trade contractors, contributing to the assessment of a wide range of Construction accounts.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively engage current and prospective clients to promote our offerings.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for collaboration with internal teams and external brokers.
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, and multitasking abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • A Bachelor's degree is required; advanced education or professional designations such as CPCU, IIA, or CRIS are preferred but not mandatory.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
