Job Description:

A Medical Assistant Float Pool professional is accountable for providing high-quality patient care in an ambulatory clinic setting. This involves caring for patients with acute and chronic needs, ensuring a positive and caring attitude, and maintaining a safe and clean environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Performs general administrative and patient care tasks in accordance with the Intermountain Health MGPSMA Scope of Practice and established policies and procedures.
  • Communicates effectively and diplomatically within a multi-disciplinary care team, ensuring seamless coordination of care.
  • Greets and prepares patients for healthcare providers, maintaining a positive and caring attitude.
  • Attends to patient needs, coordinates care, administers care, and documents appropriately, ensuring patient safety and protection of patient privacy rights.
  • Obtains and records patient information, vital signs, height, weight, allergies, current medications, medical history, and chief complaint, etc.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures, as well as medical equipment and instruments used in administering patient care.
  • May be required to draw and collect blood samples and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Performs routine tests, including EKGs, hearing, and vision screens, as requested by healthcare providers.
  • Schedules patients for diagnostic testing and follows up as necessary to ensure completion of testing.
  • Communicates test results to patients and establishes a plan of care by phone or mail, as directed by healthcare providers.
  • Documents patient plans of care, tests, and examination results in the medical record, as directed by healthcare providers.
  • Prepares, cleans, and sterilizes instruments and maintains equipment, ensuring a clean and organized environment.
  • Administers ordered medications and/or vaccines via oral, injection, topical, rectal, ophthalmic, and/or inhalant administration.
  • Escalates non-routine issues, questions, and/or concerns to the practice manager and/or healthcare providers.
  • Ensures safety checklists/quality controls are completed as required.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and composure, taking appropriate action in questionable or emergency situations.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program and/or be a certified Medical Assistant.
  • Current BLS Certification is required upon hire or within 60 days of hire upon approval.
  • Three (3) months previous experience within a healthcare setting.
  • Successful completion of initial MA onboarding within 90 days, annual skills fair, and in-services for site-specific tasks.
  • Ability to successfully function in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment, with strong organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Successful completion of an Accredited National Certification Exam for Certified Medical Assistants (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
  • One (1) year Medical Assistant experience.
Work Environment:

Regular attendance to perform work on site during regularly scheduled business hours or scheduled shifts is required. Able to understand and apply information, policies, procedures, and skills required by the position. Possess knowledge of the meaning and use of medical terminology and abbreviations. Knowledge of medical practice and care to assist in providing safe, quality patient care. Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment procedures, as well as medical equipment and instruments used in administering patient care.

Physical Requirements:

Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies. Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment.
