Surgical technologists are essential allied health professionals who play a vital role in the surgical care team. They work under the supervision of surgeons to ensure the safe and effective execution of both invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures. Their responsibilities include maintaining a secure operating room environment, ensuring the proper functioning of equipment, and maximizing patient safety throughout the surgical process. Surgical technologists possess expertise in aseptic principles and sterile techniques, integrating their knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and the use of tools and technologies to assist physicians during invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • 1. Assist in the preparation for surgeries by collaborating with the Circulating Nurse to ensure all necessary supplies, instruments, and equipment are available based on the surgical team's requirements.
  • 2. Maintain a high level of safety awareness concerning both patients and equipment, including the proper handling and identification of specimens.
  • 3. Work alongside team members to verify and accurately restock essential supplies in the assigned operating room while being fiscally responsible.
  • 4. Prepare the surgical site under the guidance of a registered nurse and support other surgical team members as needed, providing updates on the procedure's status to the relief team.
  • 5. Commit to personal and professional development by attending training sessions, maintaining certification, and staying informed on policy updates and meeting minutes.
  • 6. Recognize the significance of teamwork, consideration, and cooperation within the operating room environment.
  • 7. Prepare and uphold sterile fields to ensure quality patient care, including maintaining aseptic integrity according to established policies and procedures, staying alert to any breaches in technique, and assisting the surgeon's needs.
  • 8. Apply the principles of sterile technique consistently when assisting with each surgical procedure.
Qualifications

Education: A graduate of a CAAHEP accredited surgical technology program or a formal program as defined by the LCCST. Training may be obtained through a hospital-based program or military service.

Experience: 1-2 years of experience as a surgical technician is preferred, along with relevant certification.

Licensure: LCC-ST certification must be obtained within one year of employment if not already certified.

Special Skills: Demonstrated understanding of sterile and aseptic techniques, human anatomy, and various surgical instruments and procedures across all surgical specialties. Ability to work independently within the Perioperative Department and adhere to the Association of Surgical Technologists Standards of Practice.

Physical Demands: Ability to stand for 90% of the workday, lift up to 36 pounds, manage high-stress physical and interpersonal situations, perform repetitive tasks, and maintain fine hand manipulations. Must be able to cope with repeated skin scrubbing and adapt to varying room temperatures.
