Surgical technologists play a vital role in the surgical team, working alongside medical professionals to deliver exceptional surgical care. Under the guidance of a surgeon, they ensure the safe and efficient execution of both invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures. Their responsibilities include maintaining a sterile environment, ensuring the functionality of equipment, and maximizing patient safety throughout the surgical process. With expertise in aseptic techniques and a thorough understanding of human anatomy and surgical procedures, surgical technologists support physicians in performing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.

Key Responsibilities
- 1. Assist in the preparation for surgical procedures by collaborating with the Circulating Nurse to gather necessary supplies, instruments, and equipment tailored to the surgical team's requirements.
- 2. Uphold safety protocols concerning patient care and equipment management, including the proper handling and identification of specimens.
- 3. Work in conjunction with team members to ensure accurate restocking of essential supplies in a cost-effective manner.
- 4. Prepare the surgical site under the supervision of a registered nurse and support other surgical team members as needed, while providing updates on the procedure's status.
- 5. Commit to ongoing personal and professional development through participation in training sessions, maintaining certifications, and staying informed on policy updates.
- 6. Foster a collaborative and respectful atmosphere within the operating room, emphasizing teamwork and cooperation.
- 7. Prepare and uphold sterile fields to guarantee high-quality patient care, ensuring aseptic integrity according to established protocols and promptly reporting any breaches in technique. Collaborate with the Circulating Nurse to verify counts of sponges, needles, and instruments, and inspect supplies for proper sterilization.
- 8. Apply sterile techniques effectively during each surgical procedure, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of aseptic principles.
Education: Completion of a CAAHEP accredited surgical technology program or an equivalent formal training program.
Experience: Preferred 1-2 years of experience along with certification as a surgical technician.
Licensure: LCC-ST certification must be obtained within one year of employment if not already certified.
Special Skills: In-depth knowledge of sterile and aseptic techniques, human anatomy, and surgical instrumentation across various surgical disciplines. Ability to work independently within the Perioperative Department while adhering to the Association of Surgical Technologists Standards of Practice.
Physical Demands: Requires standing for 90% of the workday, lifting up to 36 pounds, managing high-stress situations, performing repetitive tasks, and executing fine motor skills at elevated heights. Must be able to handle frequent skin scrubbing and adapt to varying room temperatures.
