Role Summary

The Procedural Staff Nurse embodies the core values of Northwestern Medicine, adhering to our ethical standards and compliance protocols. This role requires a clinically proficient registered nurse who is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for patients in acute settings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Gather and assess patient data, establish expected outcomes, and create individualized care plans while coordinating care delivery.
  • Oversee patient care and manage the involvement of support staff in delivering direct care.
  • Engage collaboratively with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary personnel to document and communicate care plans effectively.
  • Participate in governance, committee activities, and unit-based projects.
  • Document patient responses to nursing interventions and adjust care plans based on evaluations.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices and research to inform clinical decisions.
  • Perform duties as a circulating nurse, ensuring age-appropriate care across all patient demographics.
  • Verify patient identity and consent, ensuring all documentation is accurate and complete.
  • Prepare the operating room with necessary equipment and supplies, adhering to established protocols.
  • Maintain a safe environment by following aseptic techniques and managing surgical equipment.
  • Assist in patient positioning and transport, ensuring safety and comfort.
  • Record and manage specimens accurately, preparing patients for recovery.
  • Initiate emergency measures, such as CPR, when necessary.
  • As a scrub nurse, maintain aseptic techniques and manage surgical instruments effectively.
  • Conduct thorough counts of surgical materials to ensure safety.
  • Adhere to universal precautions and manage waste disposal responsibly.
  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness and readiness of the surgical area for subsequent procedures.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing, mandatory for all new hires.
  • Current Registered Professional Nurse Licensure in the State of Illinois.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • Strong interpersonal and analytical skills.

Preferred:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Advanced computer proficiency.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and basic surgical procedures.
  • Effective time management and independent work capabilities.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Critical thinking and sound judgment in clinical situations.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and respond appropriately to challenges.
  • Prior experience with Epic systems.
  • Minimum of six months in a relevant clinical area.
