Position Overview:

The Executive Underwriter plays a pivotal role as the technical authority in a specific coverage area, providing mentorship and guidance to junior staff members.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate, model, and underwrite complex submissions in accordance with established underwriting guidelines.
  • Determine appropriate terms and conditions for acceptable risks, including premium development.
  • Engage with brokers regarding submissions that do not align with underwriting standards, proposing alternative solutions and cross-selling opportunities.
  • Support team members and management in various capacities, including referrals, identifying new business prospects, and conducting file audits.

Core Duties:

  • Act as the subject matter expert within the current and complementary product lines.
  • Manage complex accounts, accurately distinguishing between eligible and ineligible submissions through sound decision-making.
  • Analyze new business opportunities and formulate renewal strategies.
  • Establish and maintain robust relationships with brokers.
  • Utilize critical thinking and negotiation skills when working with brokers on placements.
  • Participate in the formulation and execution of annual business plans, including profitable underwriting strategies.
  • Assist in the training and onboarding of new employees, as well as refining Underwriting and Pricing Guidelines.
  • Contribute to new product development initiatives and ensure consistent implementation of practices through file audits.
  • May serve as the first point of contact for accounts exceeding individual underwriting authority.
  • Engage in cross-marketing opportunities as a company representative.
  • Undertake additional projects and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Proven ability to select, evaluate, model, and bind accounts effectively.
  • Extensive knowledge of pricing, rating techniques, and loss-sensitive programs.
  • Strong understanding of various casualty lines of coverage and key exposures.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a high degree of personal initiative.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications and internet research.

Experience:
  • 20+ years of industry experience, with 15+ years in Excess and Surplus lines.
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience is required.
  • Preferred professional designation related to the field.
