Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled Youth Mental Health Specialist to join our team at the YM & YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood. As a key member of our staff, you will work closely with our leadership and guidance counselors to identify at-risk students and provide comprehensive mental health assessments at our afterschool programs and summer day camp.

Key Responsibilities
  • Observe and identify program participants who require additional support, along with teachers/counselors.
  • Provide staff with strategies and interventions for struggling students/campers.
  • Educate parents, teachers, and other staff on available resources to better support their child(ren).
  • Refer students to counseling and psychiatric services.
  • Build a safe and supportive setting, de-escalating emergencies.
  • Conduct one-on-one and group counseling sessions with identified students who need direct service.
  • Report back to the afterschool program directors and camp director on successes and challenges for grant reporting.
  • Report any signs of child abuse or neglect to school and afterschool program director–mandated reporter.
  • Provide professional development training and support for program staff (i.e., behavior management, conflict resolution, de-escalation).
  • Participate in school and afterschool meetings and professional development programs as needed.
Requirements
  • Must be a Master's Level Psychology or Mental Health Counselor or enrolled in a Master's Level or Doctoral graduate program.
  • Must be Bi-Lingual (English/Spanish) for P.S. 173.
  • Solid clinical knowledge and cultural awareness of immigrant and trauma-related work.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including attention to detail.
  • Expertise in outside resources and community-based programs to make appropriate referrals.
  • First-rate verbal and written communication skills; able to clearly and appropriately communicate in diverse settings.
  • Proficient in using Google Suite, MS Office applications, social media, and other technology platforms for youth programs.
Work Environment
  • Work during the school year is performed in a typical school environment.
