Position Overview

The Hydrogen Fuel Cell and Water Electrolysis Group at Argonne National Laboratory is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to engage in the development and evaluation of polymeric ion-exchange membranes tailored for fuel cell applications. This role is situated within the Transportation and Power Systems Division, part of the Advanced Energy Technologies Directorate at Argonne.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will collaborate with a diverse team of experts, including experimentalists focused on electrocatalysts, advanced metrology, and physics-based modeling, as well as industry partners involved in membrane production.

The primary responsibilities include:

  • Synthesizing a range of hydrocarbon (or low-fluorine content) proton exchange ionomers through advanced polymerization techniques such as super-acid catalyzed polyhydroxyalkylation and ring-opening metathesis (ROMP).
  • Exploring alternative synthetic pathways for ionomer production.
  • Incorporating ionic functionalities into the materials post-synthesis and utilizing monomers that contain ionic groups.
  • Conducting thorough analyses using NMR and gel-permeation chromatography, as well as evaluating ionic conductivity, ion-exchange capacity, and water absorption.
  • Learning to fabricate membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for fuel cell testing, with prior experience in MEA fabrication being advantageous.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • A Ph.D. in chemical engineering, chemistry, or materials science and engineering.
  • Demonstrated expertise in polymer synthesis, characterization, and membrane fabrication, along with experience in assessing the electrochemical properties of ionomer membranes.
  • The ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and communicate proficiently at all organizational levels.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of presenting research findings at technical conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Preferred Skills

Additional qualifications that would be beneficial include:

  • Experience in polymer synthesis, characterization, and membrane fabrication.
  • Knowledge of testing ionomer membranes for properties such as conductivity, water uptake, and ion-exchange capacity.
  • Experience in fabricating membrane electrode assemblies for electrochemical testing.
  • A background in interdisciplinary collaborative research.
