Position Overview
The Hydrogen Fuel Cell and Water Electrolysis Group at Argonne National Laboratory is on the lookout for a postdoctoral researcher specializing in the development and evaluation of polymeric ion-exchange membranes tailored for fuel cell applications. This role is situated within the Transportation and Power Systems Division of the Advanced Energy Technologies Directorate at Argonne, offering a collaborative environment with a diverse team of experts.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage in the synthesis of a variety of hydrocarbon (or low-fluorine content) proton exchange ionomers through advanced polymerization techniques, including super-acid catalyzed polyhydroxyalkylation and ring-opening metathesis (ROMP).
- Explore alternative synthetic pathways for ionomer production as necessary.
- Incorporate ionic functionalities into the materials post-synthesis and utilize monomers with ionic characteristics.
- Demonstrate proficiency in analytical techniques such as NMR and gel-permeation chromatography, along with evaluating ionic conductivity, ion-exchange capacity, and water absorption.
- Learn to fabricate membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for fuel cell performance testing; prior experience in MEA fabrication is advantageous.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Materials Science and Engineering.
- Demonstrated expertise in polymer synthesis, characterization, and membrane fabrication, alongside the assessment of electrochemical properties of ionomer membranes.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams across various divisions, laboratories, and external partners.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, suitable for all organizational levels.
- Capability to present research findings at technical conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
- Commitment to embodying Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Preferred Skills
- In-depth knowledge of polymer synthesis, characterization, and membrane fabrication techniques.

- Proficiency in fabricating membrane electrode assemblies for single-cell electrochemical testing.
- Background in interdisciplinary collaborative research.
