Job Summary

The Nuclear Science and Engineering Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a highly skilled Postdoctoral Appointee to provide support in the analysis of multi-physics aspects of nuclear fission reactors. The successful candidate will assist in the investigation of reactor performance and fuel cycle facilities, and contribute to the optimization of reactor and fuel cycle design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop computational methods and/or computer codes to model the physics and engineering of reactor and fuel cycle systems.
  • Integrate physical modeling of advanced reactor fuels and materials, treatment of multiphase/multicomponent fluid dynamics, and implementation of highly optimized and stable numerical and computational methods.
  • Produce papers and reports describing results of development work, analyses, and investigations.
  • Collaborate with a multi-faceted software development team.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of one or more specialized areas of fission reactor physics, engineering, or fuel systems.
  • Knowledge of nuclear engineering principles, theories, and practices for the design and analysis of reactor systems.
  • Ability to conceive, design, and evaluate innovative approaches and solutions to quantitative problems.
  • Knowledge in fuel and materials modeling as they relate to advanced reactors.
  • Knowledge in multiphase and/or multicomponent fluid dynamics as related to advanced reactor fuels/materials.
  • Knowledge in numerical and computational methods and their application to advanced physical models.
  • Skills in computer analysis, documentation, and communication of results, as well as interaction with co-workers and support personnel.
  • Knowledge of modern software development practices and object-oriented programming techniques.
  • Ability to model Argonne's Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent) in engineering or physics.
