Research Scientist in Gas Turbine Simulation
2 months ago
The Multi-Physics Computations team at Argonne National Laboratory is looking for a Research Scientist to engage in advanced multi-physics and multi-scale Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations focused on gas turbine engines. This role is situated within the Transportation and Power Systems Division of the Advanced Energy Technologies Directorate at Argonne. The successful candidate will collaborate with a diverse team of experts, including computational fluid dynamics specialists, gas turbine modelers, and experimental researchers, to improve the predictive capabilities of gas turbine modeling software for both stationary power generation and propulsion systems.
The responsibilities include conducting multi-fidelity CFD simulations of gas turbines utilizing alternative fuels, such as hydrogen and its carriers, by enhancing both proprietary and commercial software tools, leveraging high-performance computing (HPC), and developing Reduced-Order Models to forecast rare occurrences like flame flashback and blowout.
Key Responsibilities:
- Execute high-fidelity simulations of gas turbine combustors with gaseous fuels aimed at stationary power generation applications, emphasizing the decarbonization of this sector through the adoption of carbon-free and low-carbon fuels.
- Create machine learning-based reduced-order models to predict rare events, including flame flashback.
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team of experimentalists, CFD experts, and computational scientists to perform simulations on next-generation supercomputing platforms.
- Disseminate findings through peer-reviewed technical reports, journal publications, and presentations to key stakeholders.
Position Requirements:
- Ph.D. in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field, with 0-3 years of postdoctoral experience.
- Strong understanding of gas turbine combustion principles.
- Familiarity with liquid and gaseous fuels applicable to gas turbine operations.
- Experience with machine learning software (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Julia) for reduced-order modeling, CFD, big data management, and parallel scientific computing.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively across divisions, laboratories, universities, and industry.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills suitable for all organizational levels.
- A successful candidate will embody Argonne's Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Understanding of turbulence, chemical kinetics, reacting flow physics, and combustion modeling.
- Experience simulating turbulent reacting flows in gas turbine combustors using CFD tools (e.g., CONVERGE, OpenFOAM, CharLES).
- Familiarity with high-order CFD methods and solvers.
