Research Scientist in Multi-Phase Turbine Simulation

Lemont, Illinois, United States Argonne National Laboratory Full time

The Multiphysics Computation Section at Argonne National Laboratory is actively seeking a Research Scientist to engage in advanced multi-physics and multi-scale computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations focused on aviation gas turbine engines. This role is situated within the Transportation and Power Systems Division of the Advanced Energy Technologies Directorate at Argonne. The successful candidate will collaborate with a diverse team of experts, including experimentalists, CFD specialists, and computational scientists, to improve the predictive capabilities and scalability of multi-scale and multi-physics simulation software for propulsion systems.

The responsibilities include conducting multi-scale CFD simulations that involve two-phase flows and combustion dynamics, specifically tailored for aerospace propulsion combustors. The candidate will utilize both commercial and proprietary software while leveraging high-performance computing (HPC) resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute high-fidelity simulations of nozzle flows to accurately capture the characteristics of liquid jet breakup.
  • Conduct detailed simulations of gas turbine combustors utilizing aviation fuels, focusing on the development of precise and efficient CFD models for fuel injection, fuel-air mixing, and combustion dynamics.
  • Create comprehensive libraries to model the non-ideal thermophysical properties of real fluids and multi-component vaporization dynamics, particularly in relation to sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to facilitate cutting-edge CFD modeling and simulations on next-generation supercomputing platforms.

Position Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in mechanical or aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, chemical engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in modeling and simulating three-dimensional two-phase and/or multiphase turbulent reacting flow applications using CFD software (e.g., CONVERGE, Ansys Fluent, OpenFOAM).
  • Demonstrated collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively across various divisions, laboratories, and academic institutions.
  • Strong communication skills at all organizational levels.
  • Expected to present and publish research findings in peer-reviewed technical reports and journals.
  • Commitment to embodying Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
  • Dedication to fostering a safe, inclusive, and accessible work environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of combustion theory and modeling, along with extensive understanding of liquid and gaseous fuels for engine applications.
  • Familiarity with multi-dimensional code development (in C++/C/Fortran) for two-phase/multiphase flow and turbulent combustion applications.
  • Experience with geometry manipulation using computer-aided design software.
  • Knowledge of deep machine learning techniques (using TensorFlow, PyTorch) for multi-fidelity modeling and data management.
  • Background in interdisciplinary collaborative research.
