Position Overview

Sargent & Lundy is at the forefront of the nuclear energy sector, contributing to a sustainable future through carbon-free energy generation. Our Instrumentation and Controls Engineering team is expanding as we engage in digitizing existing power plants and developing new nuclear facilities, including small modular reactors (SMR). In this role, you will be involved in significant process control engineering initiatives, focusing on the following areas:
  • Digital Systems: Engage with PLC, DCS, touchscreen interfaces, network switches, and control systems.
  • Functional Requirements: Develop procurement specifications for instrumentation and control components and systems.
  • Process Instrumentation: Conduct evaluations for instrumentation replacements and prepare nuclear modification packages.
  • Mechatronics: Design control systems for pumps, valves, heat exchangers, steam turbines, and reactors.
  • System Design: Create P&ID's and System Design Descriptions.
  • Client Engagement: Participate in client meetings and site assessments to ensure satisfaction with deliverables.
  • Mentorship: Provide guidance and support to junior engineers in the field of nuclear instrumentation and controls design.
  • Outage Support: Assist with station outage activities as necessary.
Qualifications

Essential Skills and Experience:
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, with a focus on instrumentation, mechatronics, and process controls design.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in design engineering for process control systems, with a preference for experience in nuclear power plant control systems.
  • Proficiency in control system design, including applications for low and medium voltage distribution systems and equipment controls, such as turbines, pumps, and data displays.
  • Experience with instrumentation and controls systems design for either BWR or PWR reactors, including DCS for turbine control, feedwater management, and data display.
  • Technical knowledge of available equipment and proven pre-engineered systems for effective systems design.
  • Experience in reviewing design drawings produced by others.
