Job Overview

Position Summary

The role involves performing skilled and semi-skilled tasks while operating heavy machinery such as backhoes, bulldozers, and dump trucks, primarily for the construction and upkeep of water and sewer systems. Supervision is provided by a Foreman, who gives general instructions, while work is monitored throughout the process and assessed upon completion.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are representative of the work performed in this position:

  • Operate heavy machinery, including loaders and excavators, for the construction and maintenance of water and sewer infrastructure.
  • Conduct safety inspections and perform minor repairs on machinery.
  • Maintain sanitary sewer easements and rights-of-way.
  • Assist in the installation and repair of water mains, sewer lines, and utility fixtures, ensuring safety during operations, especially in confined spaces.
  • Set up traffic cones and signage; assist in directing traffic as needed and train new team members.
  • Support the crew during video inspections and hydrostatic cleaning of sewer lines, and take on leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Foreman.
  • Restore landscaping after project completion.

Additional Responsibilities:

Employees may be required to perform other related tasks as directed by management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Applicants should possess:

  • In-depth knowledge of construction methods and techniques related to water and wastewater systems.
  • Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of heavy machinery and vehicles.
  • Understanding of the geographical layout of the area.
  • Proficiency in training and supervising staff.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Capability to operate all equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work in various weather conditions.

Working Environment

This position primarily involves outdoor work, which may include exposure to noise, dust, and varying weather conditions. Employees may also work in confined spaces or on uneven terrain.

Minimum Qualifications

1) High School diploma or equivalent.

2) A minimum of three years of experience in water and sewer system maintenance, heavy equipment operation, or pipeline construction.

3) A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the above qualifications.

4) Valid driver's license.

5) Certifications in Confined Space Entry, Trenching and Shoring, and Flagging.

6) CPR certification.

7) Ability to obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of vocational training in heavy equipment operation is preferred.
