Job Overview

Position Summary
This role involves utilizing a variety of tools and machinery while engaging in strenuous physical labor to construct and uphold stormwater systems. Tasks are assigned by a Foreman through general guidelines, with work being monitored during execution and assessed upon completion for accuracy and appropriateness.

This position requires availability for emergency responses outside of regular hours and participation in a rotating on-call schedule.


Key Responsibilities

The following are examples of the diverse tasks performed. The absence of specific duties does not exclude them from the role.

  • Operates various tools, machinery, and hand equipment, including but not limited to shovels, hammers, chainsaws, drills, and welders.
  • May assist in the operation of heavy machinery such as excavators, loaders, and dump trucks.
  • Employs assigned tools in the construction and upkeep of stormwater systems, roadways, sidewalks, and landscaping features.
  • Conducts safety inspections and minor maintenance on equipment.
  • Assists in asphalt paving and patching tasks.
  • Pours and finishes concrete structures including curbs and sidewalks.
  • Cleans and maintains stormwater management facilities and related infrastructure.
  • Sets up safety cones and signage; may assist in directing traffic.
  • Restores landscaped areas post-project completion.
  • Maintains and checks the condition of equipment and tools.
  • Collects and disposes of waste materials.

Additional Responsibilities

Employees in this classification may be expected to perform any related duties as required by proper authority.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Extensive knowledge of construction materials, methods, and techniques relevant to stormwater infrastructure and landscape restoration.

Proficient understanding of the operation and maintenance of construction machinery and vehicles.

Familiarity with the geographical layout of Rockdale County.

Ability to apply independent judgment in various situations.

Capacity to organize and prioritize tasks effectively.

Ability to safely operate all assigned equipment.

Physical ability to perform demanding manual labor.

Capability to recognize hazardous situations and respond appropriately.

Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance.


Working Environment

This position is primarily outdoors, involving exposure to various environmental conditions including noise, dust, and inclement weather. Employees may work in confined spaces or on uneven terrain.


Minimum Qualifications
  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Three (3) years of experience in stormwater infrastructure maintenance, heavy equipment operation, or civil construction.
  3. OR a combination of education, training, and experience that meets the above criteria.
  4. Valid State of Georgia Driver's license.
  5. Certifications in Confined Space Entry, Trenching and Shoring, and Flagging.
  6. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  7. Possession of a Valid State of Georgia "Class B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain it within six months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Vocational training in heavy equipment operation.
  • Possession of a Valid State of Georgia "Class A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
