Job Summary

Under close supervision, the Railway Service Associate I will collaborate with the Breakman, Conductor, or Fireman to acquire the essential skills and responsibilities associated with each role.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Work in conjunction with the Breakman, Conductor, or Fireman to understand the duties of each position.
  2. Assist in conducting preventative maintenance checks on locomotives, passenger coaches, and related apparatus.
  3. Help in completing necessary documentation, record-keeping, and required forms in a precise and organized manner.
  4. Support Roundhouse operations, including the appropriate use, storage, and upkeep of tools, supplies, and equipment.
  5. Ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both colleagues and passengers.
  6. Maintain the security, cleanliness, and upkeep of equipment, facilities, and grounds.
  7. Keep all records, files, forms, and logs well-organized and maintained.
  8. Perform related tasks as assigned that are appropriate for the position.
  9. Regular and punctual attendance is essential for this role.
  10. Engage professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers, and others during daily operations.
Required Skills

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
  • The Railway Service Associate I will participate in mandatory training in Personal Safety, Railroad Operating Rules, Federal Safety Regulations, Train Handling Practices, and Equipment Mechanical Condition.
  • Must successfully pass all written assessments and skill evaluations to complete the training program.
  • Adherence to the regulations of the Grapevine Vintage Railroad, FRA, and local ordinances is required.
  • Proficiency in office procedures, computer operations, and effective verbal and written communication is necessary.
  • Understanding of safety standards for passenger trains and associated equipment.
  • Familiarity with federal railroad inspection standards.
  • Knowledge of servicing and repairing steam, gasoline, and diesel equipment.
  • Comprehension of vehicle and equipment mechanics, including internal combustion engines and hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Ability to recognize abnormal readings or trends in data from gauges and instruments.
  • Capability to follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in diagnosing defective operations and excessive wear on mechanical components.
  • Ability to repair railroad equipment and understand the functional interrelationship of mechanical system parts.
  • Competence in interpreting technical manuals.
  • Experience in operating various equipment used in railroad maintenance and repair, including forklifts, locomotives, passenger coaches, and hand tools.
Education, Experience, and Other Requirements

A High School Diploma or GED is required.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

This position requires attendance and successful completion of FRA mandated training courses.

Must possess the ability to engage and entertain passengers and be willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.

A valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required, along with passing a criminal background check.

Pre-employment screenings, including physical, drug tests, and functional assessments, are mandatory.

Periodic random drug and alcohol testing will be conducted as per regulations.

Safety equipment such as gloves, goggles, hard hats, and steel-toe boots will be provided and must be worn as required.

Physical Demands

This position requires moderate physical labor, including strength and agility. The employee will frequently stand, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, and talk. Occasionally, the employee may need to sit or lift/carry up to 50 pounds and exert up to 100 pounds of force. Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
