POSITION: Federal Background Investigator
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct comprehensive federal background assessments and compile detailed reports in accordance with Federal Investigative Standards, applicable laws, and regulations mandated by federal agencies. Manage cases across the designated geographic area and travel to various locations including workplaces, residences, and educational institutions.
Candidate must be local to Omaha, NE.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- U.S. Citizenship;
- High School Diploma or equivalent;
- At least 1 year of investigative experience within the last five (5) years at the federal, state, or local government level;
- Some experience with Federal Investigative Standards (FIS);
- Access to a reliable personal vehicle, valid driver's license, and a satisfactory driving record;
- Willingness to travel for temporary assignments as required (by car or plane);
- Must successfully pass background checks and all necessary training;
- Ability to resolve practical issues and manage various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization;
- Capacity to interpret a range of instructions provided in oral, written, diagrammatic, or schedule formats;
- Proficient in reading, analyzing, and interpreting professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations;
- Skilled in writing reports and business correspondence;
- Competent in a Microsoft Windows operating environment, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet, and Email;
- Current (within the last 2 years) Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) or active Secret level security clearance based on an SSBI, with the ability to obtain the required security clearance.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct in-person interviews with subjects to gather factual information regarding their background and character, adhering to agency guidelines and protocols.
- Collect factual data from various personal and record sources to create a comprehensive report of investigation that includes all relevant facts about an individual's background and character, following agency guidelines and protocols.
- Travel throughout the designated geographic area to conduct investigations at different workplaces, residences, and educational institutions as cases are assigned.
- Must be prepared to travel within a 30-50 mile radius (or more) as necessary.
- Engage regularly with managers and representatives at contractor facilities, various U.S. Government organizations, and law enforcement agencies to foster and maintain effective working relationships.
- Adapt to evolving situations and environments as they arise, interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic levels.
- Exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills while maintaining a professional demeanor in all interactions.
- Workload will depend on the availability of cases in the geographic area.
- Occasional voluntary temporary assignments in other regions of the country (typically lasting 2-4 weeks) may be available.
- Perform other duties as required.
Desired Experience and Education:
- Training as an investigator from the Office of Personnel Management.
- Previous experience in background investigations supporting government contracts.
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field.
- Current Top Secret clearance.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily conducted from the investigator's home office and involves travel in the investigator's personal vehicle to various field locations for interviews. Coverage areas may require extended travel. Work hours may vary based on the availability of leads and may not always align with standard business hours, potentially including weekends or third-shift appointments.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires intermittent standing, writing/typing, walking, sitting, and driving throughout the workday, which may extend for several hours.
