Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineering Support Specialist to join our team at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Pennsylvania State University. The successful candidate will work on multiple projects, performing a wide range of tasks related to mechanical fabrication and assembly, facility maintenance, and experimental support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform assembly operations and fabrication of facility and test equipment
  • Provide input to and perform design and layout of standard facility and test equipment as directed
  • Inspect, test, and calibrate parts and equipment as directed
  • Assess and identify system faults, and adjust and repair as directed
  • Assist senior technical/engineering staff in gathering, compiling, and archiving test data in the laboratory or in the field
Requirements

The ideal candidate will have an Associate's degree or higher in a related discipline, and 2+ years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Highly capable in complex electro-mechanical component, sub-system and system assembly, disassembly, inspection, testing, design, and troubleshooting
  • Skilled in the operation of various machine shop tools, such as Bridgeport Milling machine and horizontal lathe as well as various hand tools and precision measuring equipment
  • Demonstrate the ability to interpret engineering drawings and adherence to detailed mechanical assembly procedures
  • Background or familiarity with pneumatics, electrical systems, and hydraulics
  • Very high attention to detail
  • Microsoft Office, with the ability and willingness to perform basic computer tasks or learn computer programs
  • Ability to attain and hold a Secret level DOD security clearance
Working Conditions

This position will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA. The successful candidate will be subject to a government security investigation, and must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the ARL will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
