Lead Medical Supply Supervisor

The Veterans Health Administration operates a comprehensive healthcare system, delivering a wide range of medical services across various settings including outpatient, inpatient, and community care.

QualificationsBasic Requirements:
Citizenship:
Only U.S. citizens may be appointed, unless no qualified citizens are available as per VA policy.
Experience and/or Education:
(1) Experience
- A minimum of six months of relevant experience demonstrating the ability to perform required tasks; or (2) Education
- Completion of one year of post-secondary education including at least 6 semester hours in healthcare-related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, or surgical technician training; or (3) A combination of experience and education
- Equivalent combinations of experience and education are acceptable for entry-level positions.
- Proficiency in English is required.
Grade Determinations:
GS-08: Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) Experience
- One year of experience equivalent to GS-07 level.
- AND Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
- Ability to manage and interact with diverse individuals.
- Ability to direct staff and manage tasks effectively.
- Ability to oversee all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of reusable medical equipment (RME).
- Capability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including work assignment, planning, evaluation, and staff development.
- Assignment: The Supervisory MST serves as a first-level supervisor, responsible for overseeing a team of MSTs and managing work plans.
- Manages attendance and leave, including sick and annual leave approvals.
- Communicates anticipated vacancies or workload increases to higher management.
- Recommends personnel actions such as promotions and reassignments.
- Conducts corrective interviews and addresses disciplinary issues.
- Resolves informal employee complaints and engages with union representatives on personnel matters.
- Provides necessary technical supervision for the organizational unit's operations.

Duties: The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
The incumbent must possess a thorough understanding of the processes related to Reusable Medical Equipment (RME).
Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and preparing RME is essential.
The role requires demonstrated proficiency in utilizing RME relevant to the position.
The incumbent will ensure the provision of sterile medical and surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment to various departments throughout the healthcare system.
The efficiency and timeliness of these services directly impact patient care quality.
Responsibilities include receiving contaminated instruments and equipment from all patient care areas, adhering to SOPs for decontamination.
Tasks involve disassembling and reassembling equipment, operating various sterilization and cleaning devices, and processing a wide range of semi-critical RME.
Preparing reusable medical/surgical supplies for use throughout the facility is a key duty.
Inspection of instruments post-processing to ensure cleanliness and functionality is required.
Sorting and reassembling instruments based on type and size, including complex sets for specialized surgeries, is necessary.
Ensuring all instruments are clean and correctly organized for effective sterilization is crucial.
The Supervisory MST will oversee a team of MSTs, managing work plans and schedules.
Communication with higher management regarding workload and staffing needs is essential.
Recommendations for personnel actions and addressing employee concerns are part of the supervisory responsibilities.
