Grade Determinations:
GS-08: Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)
- One year of experience at the GS-07 level is required.
- Candidates must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
- Capability to manage and interact with diverse individuals.
- Proficiency in directing staff and overseeing task completion.
- Expertise in supervising all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of reusable medical equipment (RME).
- Ability to execute a full range of supervisory responsibilities, including work assignment, planning, evaluation, and staff development.
- Assignment: The Supervisory MST serves as a first-level supervisor, overseeing a team of MSTs with administrative duties related to work planning and direction.
- Management of attendance and leave, including approval of various leave types.
- Communication with higher management regarding staffing needs and workload changes.
- Recommendations for promotions, reassignments, and performance recognition.
- Conducting corrective interviews and addressing disciplinary issues.
- Resolution of employee complaints and collaboration with union representatives.
- Provision of technical supervision necessary for the effective functioning of the unit.

Duties: The responsibilities of this position encompass, but are not limited to, the following:
The incumbent must possess comprehensive knowledge of processes related to Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) pertinent to this role.
Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and preparing RME is essential.
The role requires demonstrated proficiency in utilizing RME effectively.
The incumbent will ensure the provision of sterile medical and surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment to various departments within the medical facility.
The quality and timeliness of service provided directly impact patient care across the Veterans Health Administration network.
Responsibilities include receiving contaminated instruments and equipment from patient care areas, adhering to SOPs for cleaning and decontamination.
Disassembly and reassembly of equipment and instruments may be necessary to ensure thorough cleaning.
Operating specialized equipment such as ultrasonic cleaners, sterilizers, and other decontamination devices is required.
Processing a variety of semi-critical RME, including endoscopes and probes, is a key function.
Preparation of reusable medical/surgical supplies for use throughout the facility is also part of the role.
Inspection of instruments post-processing to ensure cleanliness and functionality is crucial.
Sorting and reassembling instruments based on type and size, particularly for complex surgical sets, is expected.
Ensuring all instruments are clean and correctly organized for sterilization is a critical responsibility.
The Supervisory MST will oversee a team of MSTs, managing work assignments and attendance.
Communication with management regarding staffing and workload is essential.
Recommendations for personnel actions and addressing employee concerns are part of the supervisory duties.
