Lead Medical Supply Technician

The Veterans Health Administration operates a premier healthcare system that provides comprehensive medical services across various settings, including outpatient, inpatient, and community care.
This multi-site healthcare organization encompasses a major medical facility along with several outpatient and residential care locations.
QualificationsBasic Requirements:

Applicants must be U.S. citizens; non-citizens may only be considered when qualified citizens are unavailable per VA policy.
Experience and/or Education:
(1) Experience
- A minimum of six months of experience demonstrating the ability to perform relevant tasks; or (2) Education
- Completion of one year of education beyond high school, including at least 6 semester hours in healthcare-related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistance, or surgical technician training; or (3) A combination of experience and education.
- Equivalent combinations of experience and education are acceptable for entry-level positions.
- Proficiency in English is required.
Grade Determinations:
GS-08: Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)
- One year of experience equivalent to GS-07 level.
- AND Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
- Ability to manage and interact with diverse individuals.
- Capability to direct staff and oversee task completion.
- Proficiency in supervising all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of reusable medical equipment (RME).
- Competence in performing a full range of supervisory duties, including work assignment, planning, evaluation, and addressing training needs.
- The Supervisory MST serves as a first-level supervisor, responsible for overseeing a team of MSTs, with administrative duties related to work planning and direction.
- Manages attendance and leave, including approval of sick leave and vacation schedules.
- Communicates with higher management regarding anticipated staffing changes or workload increases.
- Recommends personnel actions such as promotions, reassignments, and performance recognition.
- Conducts corrective interviews and addresses disciplinary issues with staff.
- Resolves informal employee complaints and collaborates with union representatives on personnel matters.
- Provides necessary technical supervision to ensure the effectiveness of the organizational unit.

Duties: The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
The incumbent must possess a thorough understanding of the processes involved in managing Reusable Medical Equipment (RME).
Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and preparing RME is essential.
The incumbent should demonstrate proficiency in utilizing RME relevant to this role.
This position involves providing sterile medical and surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment to various departments within the healthcare system.
The quality and timeliness of the work performed directly impact patient care and contribute to overall healthcare quality.
The incumbent will receive all reusable, contaminated instruments and equipment from various patient care areas.
Adhering to SOPs for the removal of contaminants is critical, including soaking and hand washing before processing through ultrasonic cleaners and washer/disinfectors.
Disassembly and reassembly of equipment and instruments, particularly those with internal contamination risks, are required.
Operates various cleaning and sterilization equipment, including ultrasonic cleaners, washer-sterilizers, and autoclaves.
Processes a wide range of semi-critical RME, including diverse endoscopes and probes used in various medical specialties.
Prepares a comprehensive array of reusable medical/surgical supplies and equipment utilized throughout the healthcare system.
Inspects instruments post-processing to ensure all contaminants are removed and functionality is intact.
Sorts instruments by size and type, reassembling trays based on inventory needs.
Ensures all instruments are clean and properly organized within sets, particularly for complex surgical procedures.
Utilizes appropriate packing methods to protect instruments during sterilization.
The Supervisory MST is responsible for overseeing a team of MSTs, managing work assignments, and ensuring compliance with operational standards.
Maintains communication with management regarding staffing and workload issues.
Conducts performance evaluations and addresses employee concerns as necessary.
