Position Overview

The Senior Food Safety Quality Assurance Manager is tasked with overseeing the Food Safety Quality Assurance Department. This role entails providing leadership and guidance to ensure the production of safe, high-quality food products within a secure environment, while also focusing on cost management and customer satisfaction. The position is responsible for the daily operations of quality and food safety at the Bakkavor facility, ensuring adherence to food safety protocols, internal and external quality standards, and compliance with regulatory agencies (USDA, FDA, and Local Health Department) as well as the company's strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guarantee compliance with stringent food safety and quality standards as dictated by customer specifications and regulatory bodies, collaborating with various plant departments to uphold these standards.
  • Collaborate with New Product Development teams to establish food safety and quality criteria for new offerings, including visual benchmarks.
  • Oversee the management of non-conforming products, leading cross-functional teams to investigate deviations and formulate corrective and preventive measures.
  • Conduct regular reviews of products and documentation to ensure compliance with analytical, sensory, and microbiological standards.
  • Ensure all HACCP/Food Safety Plan deviations are properly documented and that corrective actions are effectively implemented.
  • Lead investigations into internal product failures, environmental concerns, and customer feedback, ensuring that corrective actions are executed.
  • Facilitate the achievement of food safety, quality, and process objectives to support timely product launches and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Implement and oversee environmental monitoring and sanitation validation programs, analyzing results and driving improvements.
  • Represent the FSQA group during customer visits and third-party audits, maintaining GFSI certification.
  • Serve as the primary contact for regulatory agencies, addressing any issues and liaising with USDA inspectors.
  • Monitor and report on quality and food safety KPIs, escalating concerns to the appropriate management and leadership teams.
  • Establish validation and verification programs to confirm the effectiveness of food safety and quality systems.
  • Enhance the reputation of the department and organization by taking ownership of new initiatives and exploring opportunities for added value.
  • Act as a mentor and role model for team members, embodying the company's ethics and values while fostering a culture of safety and excellence.
  • Inspire and develop the team to meet their potential and align with business needs, ensuring personal development plans are in place and regularly reviewed.

Supervisory Role

This position oversees a team of 5-10 individuals, executing supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include recruitment, training, work assignment, performance evaluation, and conflict resolution.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in the essential duties outlined above. The following qualifications are required:

  • A bachelor's degree in food science or a related field.
  • HACCP and PCQI Certification.
  • SQF Practitioner certification is preferred.

Experience

  • A minimum of 7 years in the ready-to-eat food industry.
  • Experience with GFSI standards is required.
  • At least 5 years in a managerial role within FSQA is preferred.
  • A proven track record of leading FSQA operations through significant changes and growth.
  • Experience in FDA and USDA regulated environments, particularly in ready-to-eat food.

Language Skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Proficient in writing reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals.
  • Capable of effectively presenting information and responding to inquiries from various stakeholders.

Food Safety and Quality Responsibilities

This role entails overseeing the Food Safety & Quality Management Systems within the plant, providing guidance to ensure the production of safe and high-quality food, and identifying any products that do not meet the company's food safety and quality standards to prevent their distribution.
