Position Summary

The Senior Food Safety Quality Assurance Manager is tasked with overseeing the Food Safety Quality Assurance Department. This role involves providing strategic leadership and guidance to ensure the production of safe, high-quality food products in a secure environment, while maintaining cost efficiency and a focus on customer satisfaction. The manager will supervise daily quality and food safety operations at the Bakkavor facility, ensuring adherence to food safety protocols, compliance with internal and external quality standards, and alignment with customer specifications, regulatory bodies (USDA, FDA, and Local Health Department), and corporate strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with stringent food safety and quality standards as per customer and regulatory requirements, collaborating with various plant departments to enforce these standards.
  • Partner with New Product Development teams to integrate food safety and quality criteria for new offerings, including visual quality benchmarks.
  • Oversee the management of non-conforming products, leading cross-functional teams to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Conduct regular reviews of product documentation to ensure compliance with analytical, sensory, and microbiological specifications.
  • Document and address all HACCP/Food Safety Plan deviations, ensuring corrective measures are effectively executed.
  • Lead site teams in addressing internal product failures, environmental concerns, and customer feedback, ensuring timely corrective actions.
  • Facilitate the achievement of food safety, quality, and process objectives to support timely product launches and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Implement and assess environmental monitoring and sanitation validation programs, analyzing results to drive improvements.
  • Represent the FSQA group during customer visits and third-party audits, ensuring compliance with GFSI certification standards.
  • Act as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies to resolve issues and facilitate inspections.
  • Monitor quality and food safety KPIs, escalating issues to relevant managers and senior leadership as necessary.
  • Establish validation and verification programs to confirm the effectiveness of food safety and quality systems.
  • Enhance the reputation of the department and organization by proactively addressing new challenges and exploring opportunities for added value.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model for direct reports, embodying the company's ethical standards and values.
  • Inspire and develop team members to reach their potential while aligning with business objectives and succession planning.

Supervisory Role

This position oversees a team of 5-10 employees, executing supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include recruitment, training, work assignment, performance evaluation, and conflict resolution.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in the essential duties outlined. The following qualifications are required:

  • A bachelor's degree in food science or a related field.
  • HACCP and PCQI Certification is mandatory.
  • SQF Practitioner certification is preferred.

Experience Requirements

  • A minimum of 7 years in the ready-to-eat food industry.
  • Experience with GFSI standards is essential.
  • At least 5 years in a managerial role within FSQA is preferred.
  • A proven track record of leading FSQA operations through significant change and growth.
  • Experience in FDA and USDA regulated environments, with a preference for ready-to-eat food experience.

Language Proficiency

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Capability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals.
  • Effective presentation skills to communicate with managers, clients, customers, and production staff.

Food Safety and Quality Oversight

This role is responsible for the oversight of the plant's Food Safety & Quality Management Systems, providing guidance to ensure the production of safe and high-quality food. The manager will identify products that do not meet safety and quality standards and prevent their distribution.
