Position Overview

The Senior Food Safety Quality Assurance Manager plays a pivotal role in overseeing the Food Safety Quality Assurance Department. This position entails providing strategic leadership and guidance to ensure the production of safe, high-quality food products in a secure environment, while also focusing on cost efficiency and customer satisfaction. The manager will supervise daily quality and food safety operations at the Bakkavor facility, ensuring adherence to food safety protocols, internal and external quality standards, and compliance with regulatory bodies (USDA, FDA, and Local Health Department) in alignment with the company's strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with stringent food safety and quality specifications as dictated by customer requirements and regulatory standards, collaborating with other departments to enforce these standards.
  • Partner with New Product Development teams to integrate food safety and quality criteria for new products, including visual benchmarks.
  • Oversee the management of non-conforming products, leading cross-functional teams to identify root causes and develop corrective actions.
  • Conduct regular reviews of product documentation to ensure compliance with analytical, sensory, and microbiological standards.
  • Document and address all HACCP/Food Safety Plan deviations, ensuring corrective actions are effectively implemented.
  • Lead investigations into internal product failures, environmental concerns, and customer feedback, ensuring successful corrective and preventive measures are taken.
  • Facilitate on-time product launches and continuous improvement initiatives across materials, packaging, efficiencies, and cost reductions.
  • Implement and oversee environmental monitoring and sanitation validation programs, reviewing results and enhancing processes as necessary.
  • Represent the FSQA group during customer visits and third-party audits, maintaining GFSI certification.
  • Act as the primary contact for regulatory agencies, addressing any issues with USDA inspectors.
  • Monitor and report on quality and food safety KPIs, escalating concerns to the appropriate management and leadership teams.
  • Establish validation and verification programs to confirm the effectiveness of food safety and quality systems.
  • Enhance the reputation of the department and organization by embracing new challenges and exploring opportunities for value addition.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model for team members, upholding the company's ethical standards and values.
  • Inspire and develop team members to reach their potential, ensuring alignment with business needs and succession planning.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This role manages a team of 5-10 individuals, executing supervisory duties in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training employees, assigning tasks, evaluating performance, and addressing employee concerns.

Qualifications

To excel in this position, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill essential duties effectively. The qualifications listed below represent the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this role:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in food science or a related field.
  • HACCP and PCQI Certification required.
  • SQF Practitioner certification preferred.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 7 years in the ready-to-eat food industry.
  • Experience with GFSI standards is essential.
  • Preferred 5 years in a managerial role within FSQA.
  • Proven track record of leading FSQA operations through significant changes and growth.
  • Experience in FDA and USDA regulated environments, with a preference for ready-to-eat food experience.

Language Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Capable of writing reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals.
  • Adept at presenting information and responding to inquiries from managers, clients, customers, and production staff.

Food Safety and Quality Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for overseeing the Food Safety & Quality Management Systems within their designated areas of the plant. The manager will guide staff to ensure the production of safe and high-quality food, identifying any products that do not meet safety and quality standards and preventing their distribution.
