Senior Project Manager for Power Generation

Under the general oversight of a department head or engineering/operations director, this role entails managing multiple projects as a project manager, discipline lead, and/or field construction coordinator for power generation initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, environmental standards, reliability, infrastructure upgrades, and operational efficiency. The individual will be accountable for all facets of the project throughout its lifecycle (initiate, plan, execute, control, close), including assembling project teams, delegating responsibilities, identifying necessary resources, and crafting schedules to ensure projects are completed on time. A thorough understanding of system scope and project objectives, along with the roles of each team member, is essential for effective coordination of team activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the planning, design, and execution of multiple capital and/or operational projects (e.g., modifications and enhancements to facilities and infrastructure) under supervision.
  • Facilitates team dynamics, including team chartering, collaborative problem-solving, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Ensures the application of robust project management principles and practices across all projects.
  • Identifies solutions to critical business challenges and presents alternative strategies. Develops and submits business cases and/or project justifications for various initiatives.
  • Creates comprehensive project plans, ensuring that project scopes, team roles, milestone dates, and procurement strategies are clearly defined for all assigned projects.
  • Monitors projects to ensure objectives related to safety, timelines, budgets, scope, code compliance, environmental standards, and quality are achieved through established metrics and benchmarking.
  • Drafts procurement and technical specifications for vendor and contractor services.
  • Collaborates with procurement to solicit external materials and services as needed for project deliverables, including managing purchase orders and contracts, processing invoices, and coordinating with inventory personnel.
  • Negotiates with vendors and contractors regarding changes in work scope, ensuring that all contractual obligations are fulfilled on schedule according to the defined scope of work and technical specifications.
  • Plans and oversees ongoing design and construction activities for compliance with contracts and industry standards, quality assurance programs, schedule adherence, and workmanship quality across multiple trades.
  • Reviews and approves design documents and drawings for compliance with contracts, industry standards, and company practices.
  • Coordinates the development of both conceptual and detailed designs.
  • Effectively communicates issues and proposes strategies and tactics for resolution.
  • Engages with management at various levels, including senior management, to secure necessary approvals and manage risks in line with corporate governance.
  • Develops, reviews, and approves procedures for startup and testing related to check-out, startup, and commissioning.
  • Trains power plant operating and maintenance staff on newly implemented systems.
  • Documents business processes within relevant divisions.
  • Coordinates the activities of the construction management team in conjunction with field operations to ensure quality assurance.
  • Conducts check-out and startup activities alongside plant staff, assigning electrical, instrumentation/controls, and mechanical tasks to technical leads, and coordinating performance testing.
  • Provides Subject Matter Expertise to support Power Generation Operations and Maintenance teams.
  • Analyzes project data and generates reports.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Science or a related field from an accredited institution, or equivalent technical/craft experience in power generation.
  • Accountable for executing projects that align with Corporate and Business Unit strategies.
  • Technical authority on Project Management methodologies, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to oversee significant engineering projects, programs, and initiatives independently.
  • Provides technical guidance and leadership while managing the planning, design, and execution of multiple high-risk, large-scale, multi-million dollar (typically $5M+) complex capital and operational projects with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor other Project Managers on technical and project management process issues related to project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, controlling, and closure.
  • Handles complex content with diverse issues and challenges.
  • Decisions made may significantly impact time, cost, safety, or reliability.
  • Participates in the development of the Power Generation 5-year capital budget.
  • Engages extensively with upper management regarding business cases and project status, presentations to the Board of Trustees, contract implementation strategies, negotiation strategies, and multi-unit strategy studies.
  • Maintains high levels of communication with key interdepartmental stakeholders.
  • Communicates with power plant personnel through plant communication meetings.
  • Provides coaching to less experienced project managers, engineers, and other project team members to support their career development.
  • Creates project update presentations for upper management.
