Director, Labor Relations

Job Summary:

The National Audubon Society is seeking a seasoned Labor Relations Director to lead the negotiation and administration of collective bargaining agreements with the organization's union(s). This role will be responsible for implementing the labor relations strategy, including contract administration, data collection, and support for the collective bargaining process.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of labor and employment laws, as well as experience in labor negotiations and mediation. They will also possess excellent problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills, with the ability to maintain a team-focused attitude.

This is a hybrid position, and the successful candidate will have the flexibility to work from one of our office locations in New York, NY, or Washington, DC, with a preference for Washington, DC.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement labor relations policies and practices.
  • Support the collective bargaining process with the union.
  • Participate in negotiations and provide administrative support for negotiation sessions.
  • Develop and oversee the management of various labor relations activities, including grievance and arbitration processes.
  • Advise management on issues regarding union-management relations, such as contract negotiations.
  • Provide guidance to People and Culture staff on labor relations issues.
  • Establish relationships with key labor relations stakeholders, including union representatives and outside counsel.
  • Oversee and facilitate labor/management meetings.
  • Provide functional expertise to the organization on labor relations issues.
  • Oversee and conduct Audubon labor relations training.
  • Partner with Employee Relations and Legal to resolve ongoing concerns, investigations, arbitrations, legal disputes, and resolutions.
  • Analyze and report labor relations data.
  • Partner with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of progressive HR generalist/HR business partner experience and at least 7+ years of experience in labor relations in non-profit and/or for-profit organizations.
  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, labor relations, business, or related field. JD highly preferred. An equivalent combination of education and work experience will also be considered.
  • Knowledge of labor and employment laws, NLRB, labor negotiations experience a must.
  • Mediation and arbitration experience highly preferred.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills and the ability to maintain a team-focused attitude.
  • An understanding of specific labor relations needs related to a company's collective bargaining agreement and business strategy.
  • Strength in situation leadership, judgment, problem-solving, strategic thinking, and cultural competency.
  • Excellent project management skills with ability to manage multiple tasks and lead cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other key Microsoft Office and web-based products.
  • Experience in change management and the ability to effectively implement programs.
  • Ability to be both strategic and execution focused.
  • Strong understanding of human behavior, business management, operations, and strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships across stakeholder groups with an array of needs, including the ability to actively listen and offer proactive and practical solutions to employee concerns.
  • Strong leadership, exceptional judgment, and influencing skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (written and oral); ability to explain labor and HR policies, processes, and practices in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to and experience in advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
