Position Overview:

The Lead Legal Advisor at Consumers Energy is instrumental in partnering with various stakeholders to draft, negotiate, finalize, and execute a diverse array of intricate commercial agreements. This role requires providing strategic legal guidance while ensuring that the contractual frameworks safeguard the organization and mitigate risks, thus enabling the achievement of commercial goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver comprehensive legal analysis and innovative problem-solving in the realm of complex commercial contracts, identifying legal challenges and structuring a variety of standard and unique transactions.
  • Offer counsel that aligns business profitability with robust contractual protections, ensuring the organization’s interests are prioritized.
  • Interpret complex legal and regulatory documents, conveying relevant implications on contract terms in clear, accessible language tailored to the audience.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and, when necessary, external advisors to proactively address potential issues or risks throughout the contract lifecycle.
  • Stay informed on legal precedents, regulatory changes, and developments within the energy sector, providing timely advice to stakeholders.
  • Negotiate a broad spectrum of commercial agreements with various counterparties across and beyond the energy industry.
  • Effectively manage multiple priorities, driving numerous projects simultaneously while identifying and resolving legal and business challenges.
  • Develop and implement exemplary contract lifecycle management processes and practices.
  • Create training programs and resources for internal teams to enhance their understanding of contractual obligations.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with a wide range of complex commercial contracts, particularly in areas such as construction, consulting, engineering, equipment procurement, asset management, interconnection, and real estate.
  • Ability to navigate business challenges, providing practical recommendations under pressure while balancing legal risks and business objectives.
  • Proven track record of building strong relationships with cross-functional teams, including finance, regulatory, and asset management.
  • Exceptional client service skills and the ability to deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines.
  • Willingness to expand expertise in new areas and flexibility to support the legal team as needed.
  • Strong work ethic, communication, drafting skills, and sound judgment.
  • Proficiency in relevant software tools, including DocuSign, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Office Suite, and comparison software platforms.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience providing in-house legal counsel for large organizations in the area of legal contracts.
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school is required.
  • Active Bar License in any U.S. jurisdiction is required.
