Job Title: Peer Support Counselor

SELF Inc. is seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Peer Support Counselor to join our team. As a Peer Support Counselor, you will play a vital role in providing support and guidance to individuals struggling with homelessness and addiction.

Job Summary:

The Peer Support Counselor will be responsible for engaging with clients at various locations, including on the street, and providing assessments and support services. This role requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Engage with clients at various locations, including on the street, and provide assessments and support services.
  • Evaluate and communicate concerns that may interfere with providing Peer Outreach Support and conduct services promptly per program and organizational guidelines.
  • Transport clients to and from shelters, recovery houses, clinics, detoxification centers, and other relevant locations.
  • Assist clients in finding shelter placement and refer them to resources that provide essential services, such as showers, meals, clothing, and health examinations.
  • See new clients twice a month and previous clients once a month, and update information in the funder-required database.
  • Refer clients to outpatient treatment facilities and make referrals to relevant government agencies and organizations.
  • Report vehicle maintenance needs to supervisors and maintain a daily travel log.
  • Participate in general staff meetings, program and departmental meetings, and training as directed and needed.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma required.
  • At least one year of training and/or experience in homelessness, shelter management, clean/sober addiction, and outreach or substance abuse, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least two years of experience working in programs with residential facilities/properties and providing services to individuals with challenges such as homelessness, substance abuse, mental health, or other barriers to self-sufficiency.
  • Must be well organized, detail-oriented, task-driven, and able to work independently and set daily priorities.
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and motor vehicle record.
